HARRIET ARDENIA "HATTIE"4 FILLYAW (SAMPSON M.3, WILLIAM2, RICHARD1) was born 6 Feb 1882 in Mississippi, and died 12 Nov 1936 in Desha Co., AR. She married JAMES W. CHIDESTER Abt. 1896. He was born May 1861 in Louisiana, and died 13 Oct 1944 in Shelby Co., TN. Notes for HARRIET ARDENIA "HATTIE" FILLYAW: From a post to the Philyaw Genforum message board by Delores (Chidester) Miller (email address not available), 18 June 2001: HATTIE ARDENIA FILLYAW was born in 1882 in Mississippi. HATTIE was about 6 feet tall and weighed more than 300 pounds. She was Black Dutch and Cherokee Indian. She died of pneumonia in either the spring or fall of 1936 at the age of 56. She is buried alongside her husband JAMES W. CHIDESTER at Irby (near Back Gate and Watson on Arkansas Highway 1). JAMES E. CHIDESTER remembers watching JAMES W. making the tombstone and putting a picture of HATTIE on it. The tombstone was hewn out of granite. JAMES E. was about 5 years old. HATTIE's brother was ARTHUR FILLYAW. He married INEZ HORTON from Star City, AR. Notes for JAMES W. CHIDESTER: From a post to the Philyaw Genforum message board by Delores (Chidester) Miller (email address not available), 18 June 2001: JAMES W. CHIDESTER was born in 1866 in Mississippi. (Note: if he died at age and time listed below, he should have been born in 1858.) He never told what the "W" stood for. JAMES said he was born in England and came to the U.S. with his brother, JOHN. He had very dark brown eyes with gray hair, thinning on the top front. He wore hats, had a very quick temper, was about 6 feet tall, and weighed about 150 pounds. He made a living by cattle, farming, fishing in the Mississippi River, and making white lightning. JAMES W. CHIDESTER spent time in the Dumas, AR jail for selling white lightning before the 1926 flooed -- probably in 1925 or 1926. JAMES W. CHIDESTER living on the farm of ARTHUR FILLYAW (his wife's brother) in Star City, Lincoln Co., AR until 6 months prior to his death. He moved to Star City after HATTIE's (his wife's) death in 1936. He moved to the home of KIRBY CHIDESTER, located 12 miles west of Dumas on the Johnson farm. JAMES lived there until KIRBY moved to Grady to be farm manager of Edward Wood's farm. JAMES then went to Memphis, TN to live with KIRBY's brother, SAM, for the last 6 months of his life. He died of TB of the lungs at the age of 86 in the fall of 1944 (13 Oct. 1944). JAMES is buried in Irby Cemetery (near Back Gate and Watson), Arkansas Highway 1. JAMES' wife HATTIE is also buried there. It is our understanding that JAMES W. CHIDESTER was married before he wed HATTIE. This first marriage had no children. He had one sister that came around from time to time. She married a REINHARDT. Everyone called JAMES W. CHIDESTER "Uncle JIM." He was a hard-working man originally from Mississippi. He never talked about his family. When he was asked about his family, he would change the subject. When asked about his middle name, his answer was, "For me to know and you to find out." He was in his 60s when KIRBY and MAY were married. NANCY CHIDESTER stated that JAMES W. CHIDESTER himself told her that he and his brother JOHN came from England (we cannot substantiate this). It is also said that Chidester, AR is named after JOHN CHIDESTER, the brother of JAMES W. CHIDESTER. Children of HARRIET FILLYAW and JAMES CHIDESTER are: 11. i. JOHN THOMAS "BILL"5 CHIDESTER, b. 2 Nov 1897, Belzoni, Humphreys Co., MS; d. 22 Dec 1967, Grant Co., AR. 12. ii. Notes for JAMES CLIFTON "SAM" CHIDESTER: From a post to the Philyaw Genforum message board by Delores (Chidester) Miller (email address not available), 18 June 2001: KIRBY had two brothers, BILL (JOHN THOMAS "BILL" CHIDESTER) and SAM (JAMES CLIFTON CHIDESTER, born 2 Feb. 1899). SAM ended up in Memphis, TN due to an accident. SAM was riding on a horse with a gun in the belt of his pants while he was running cattle at Back Gate, AR. The gun went off and the bullet stayed in his leg. Gangrene set in, so his wife took him to her family's home in Memphis where a doctor amputated his leg. KIRBY LEE5 CHIDESTER (HARRIET ARDENIA "HATTIE"4 FILLYAW, SAMPSON M.3, WILLIAM2, RICHARD1) was born 17 Aug 1902 in Douglas, Lincoln Co., AR, and died 16 Dec 1983 in Duarte, Orange Co., CA. He married (1) BURLAN LEE JARRETT Oct 1925. He married (2) MAY STILLMAN MOORE 10 May 1928, daughter of JAMES MOORE and MINNIE BAKER. She was born 10 May 1911 in Perry Co., AR. Notes for KIRBY LEE CHIDESTER: From a post to the Philyaw Genforum message board by Delores (Chidester) Miller (email address not available), 18 June 2001: KIRBY LEE CHIDESTER was born in Douglas, Lincoln Co., AR on 17 Aug. 1902. KIRBY was the son of JAMES W. CHIDESTER and HATTIE ARDENIA FILLYAW. KIRBY passed away on 16 Dec. 1983 in Duarte, CA of cancer. KIRBY had two brothers, BILL (JOHN THOMAS "BILL" CHIDESTER) and SAM (JAMES CLIFTON CHIDESTER, born 2 Feb. It is said by [KIRBY's] second wife, MAY, that he graduated from high school. However, his daughter NANCY, from his first marriage, stated that he only went to the 6th or 7th grade because when she dropped out of school, KIRBY sent her a blistering letter telling her that she was making a big mistake and that she shouldn't do what he did and drop out. KIRBY was married to BURLAN REE JARRETT from Potts Camp, MS. They were married in October 1925. They had one daughter, NANCY LEE CHIDESTER. NANCY was born in Dumas, Desha Co., AR on 1 Oct. 1926. She attended school in Gillette, AR from 1st to 4th grade. She attended the 5th grade in Pine Bluff, AR; 6th through 8th grade in Lawson, AR; and went to Mapleville High School in Little Rock, AR. She finished the 10th grade. NANCY married JOSEPH KINCAID of St. Louis, MO. JOSEPH was born on 7 Sept. 1923. NANCY worked at the Ammunition factory in Jacksonville, AR during WWII. She rode the bus from Little Rock to Jacksonville, about 15 miles. KIRBY did sell white lightning during his first marriage. KIRBY and BURLAN divorded in 1928. KIRBY married MAY STILLMAN MOORE (born 10 May 1911) on 10 May 1928 in Dumas, Desha Co., AR. During his second marriage, KIRBY managed a farm in Gould, Lincoln Co., AR, [and] worked for the WPA in Dumas and McGehee, AR. He did some sharecropping in Grady, AR, and was foreman at Round Lake, Grady, AR near Edward Wood's home. (Info provided by JAMES E. CHIDESTER, March 1989.) The KIRBY CHIDESTER family lived near Back Gate, AR between the Arkansas River and the levee. JAMES W. CHIDESTER lived there also. KIRBY Jr. AND JAMES E. were born there. KIRBY worked cattle and made white lightning. Then the family went to Back Gate to help BILL run the ferry on the Arkansas River. The family moved to Plum Bayou between Winchester and Kelso (Arkansas Highway 138) on the county line. There KIRBY worked as a day laborer on the surrounding farms at 25 cents a day. The family moved to McGehee where KIRBY worked as a day laborer (this was during the Depression). SUNNY and SISTER came to live with KIRBY during this time. SISTER married RUSSELL BLACK. CHARLIE HERREN, "Son," and LILLIAN HERREN, "Sister," were raised by MAY CHIDESTER. These Herrens were KATHY CHIDESTER's mother's sister's children. Their mother was MARGARET R. "MAGGIE" FILLYAW. She was married to WILLIAM HENRY HERRON in 1898. They had four sons: JOHN (born 14 Feb. 1900), TOM (born 1901), TULL (born 1902), and CALVIN (born 1903). CALVIN died as a small child. WILLIAM HERRON was married before MAGGIE to a ROSEMAN HARDIN. She died right after the birth of LILLIAN. They had two children: CHARLIE "SON" and LILLIAN. In 1944, KIRBY and his family moved to downtown Dumas, AR, where he worked for the WPA (Work Project Administration). KIRBY moved his family again as he went to work on the Johnson Farm at Wells Bayou. JAMES W. CHIDESTER came to live with KIRBY again. (JAMES E. does not know where JAMES W. was between Back Gate and Wells Bayou.) The family moved to Grady so KIRBY could manage the Edward Woods farm (Katie Woods' brother) at Round Lake. KIRBY then worked for Ned Harden on his farm as a day laborer. In 1951, the family moved to Altadena, VA. A short time later they moved to Pasadena, CA, and in 1964 they moved to 1604 Delford Ave., Duarte, CA (this is MAY CHIDESTER's home today). KIRBY worked for Bob's Big Boy for almost 20 years. Some of the other jobs he held included general maintenance man of a Catholic church, cleaning bars, and collecting glass. He enjoyed libation, smoking, and wore hats. Notes for MAY STILLMAN MOORE: From a post to the Philyaw Genforum message board by Delores (Chidester) Miller (email address not available), 18 June 2001: MAY STILLMAN MOORE was born in Satuma, Perry Co., AR on 10 May 1911. Her father is JAMES STILLMAN MOORE, he was born in 1874 in Fort Smith, AR. Her mother is MINNIE MAY BAKER, she was born in 1884 in AR. (We also have documents that show she was born in 1879 and 1880). Her parents were married on 1 Aug.1910. MAY's mother died in 1912. MAY does not know anything else about her. Between the ages of 1 and 3 years old, MAY stayed with Tom LaRue. Tom had a dog and no children. He wanted to adopt MAY, but JAMES MOORE said no. MAY was raised by her stepmother (EMMER) from the age of 3. She was made to call her "momma." She was an average stepmother -- 4 feet tall and 110 lbs. She died of pneumonia on 20 Jan. 1942. Her father worked in coal mine for 26 years setting dynamite blasts. He ran around with the Dalton and Ford Gangs. He was 6'2" and 180 pounds. He died in 1957 at the age of 80. He was a "Blood brother" of Oklahoma Indian Territory. (We were told that he was raised on the Reservation.) MAY met KIRBY when she was 10 years old. Her dream was "I'll get married to a tall man with black hair. I'll marry one time and that's that." She married KIRBY on 14 May 1929. MAY attended Pendleton School through 3rd grade. She babysat, was a "domestic engineer" (her words), worked in a Pasadena, CA motel house keeping for 2-3 months. She quit there because she did not like that work, she did that at home. She also worked at Hays Spray Gun Works in Pasadena, CA making misting sprayers for 6 months. She had to quit due to her arthritis as she could not do the work. Her first home with electricity was in 1942 at Round Lake, AR. In 1955 she had her first home with inside bathroom. In 1927, MAY's father owned a model t car. MAY enjoys cooking, yard work -- roses, flowers, and staying outside. She has lots of photographs of children, grandchildren, and great-grand children hanging throughout the living room of her home in Duarte, CA. MAY's half-sister had high cheek bones and black hair. Her grandfather was GEORGE MOORE. JAMES STILLMAN MOORE had two children [by his second marriage]: a daughter Nan and a son. They live in Oklahoma. WILLIAM SAMPSON MOORE (brother of JAMES STILLMAN MOORE) went by "WILL" MOORE. He had two children; CHARLES BENJAMIN MOORE and ULVA (MOORE) CHANCEY. ULVA had two children: MARGARET CHANCEY BALDWIN (lives in LR) and ALBERT. MAY MOORE CHIDESTER and BURLAN REE JARRETT CHIDESTER (KIRBY's first wife) were girlhood friends. BURLAN married a man from Camden, AR, CHARLIE MOORE, after divorcing KIRBY. CHARLIE MOORE and MAY MOORE were first cousins. His father, WILL MOORE, is MAY's uncle. Child of KIRBY CHIDESTER and BURLAN JARRETT is: i. NANCY LEE6 CHIDESTER, b. 1 Oct 1926, Desha Co., AR; m. JOSEPH KINCAID, 25 Mar 1947, California; b. 7 Sep 1923, Missouri; d. Sep 1998. Children of KIRBY CHIDESTER and MAY MOORE are: ii. KIRBY LEE6 CHIDESTER, JR., b. 17 Feb 1930, Desha Co., AR; d. Jun 1982, Laurens Co., GA; m. EDITH COBB. iii. JAMES EUGENE CHIDESTER, b. 12 Oct 1931, Back Gate, Desha Co., AR; m. FLORENCE JOAN STOCKDILL, 29 Oct 1951; b. 26 Nov 1932, Lincoln Co., AR. Notes for JAMES EUGENE CHIDESTER: From a post to the Philyaw Genforum message board by Delores (Chidester) Miller (email address not available), 18 June 2001: JAMES EUGENE CHIDESTER is the second oldest son of KIRBY and MAY CHIDESTER. He was born 12 Oct.1931 at Back Gate, AR. JAMES moved around during his younger days due to his father trying to find work in the depression of the 1930s and 1940s. JAMES graduated from Grady High School 19 May 1950. FLORENCE JOAN STOCKDILL was a classmate. After graduation he worked the summer with H.R. Wood Jr. overhauling the cotton gin. The he went to work for Ned Hardin in his gin where he weighed cotton and sold seeds. On 18 Dec. 1950 he enlisted in the US Air Force. JAMES E. had his basic training in Texas. He married FLORENCE JOAN STOCKDILL on 29 Oct. 1951. They both went to JAMES' new assignment, Lake Charles Air Force Base, LA. During this assignment CHRISTOPHER EUGENE was born 12 June 1953, and GARY DALE was born 27 Sept.1954. JAMES was sent to Africa on a temporary assignment and had to grow a mustache (to look older); it took the entire tour of duty to grow it. JAMES was tranferred to Keesler AFB (Biloxi, MS) in 1955. He was an instructor of electronics. JAMES remembers one class in which he had 12 foreign students, including two Germans, two Danes, and two Chinese. He found it quite interesting that in foreign countries the students are taught English and can speak it extremely well, whereas in the U.S. it is not even required to know a second language. In October 1955 he was transferred to Lojas AFB, Azores Island (Portugal). DOLORES ANN was born on 3 Nov. 1956. DOLORES had dual citizenship till the age of 4 when she became a U.S. Citizen. In 1957, he was transferred back to Keelser AFB (Biloxi, MS). In 1963, he was set to DaNang, South Vietnam. While he was in Vietnam, the family moved to Grady, AR. During this time DIANA LYNN was born in Dumas 3 April 1964. In 1964, he was transferred back to Keesler AFB, where he helped to write the "Nine-Level Course," the highest level electronics course at the time. During this time he also changed his field of work to avionic maintenance. In April 1969, JAMES was transferred to Itazuki, Japan. In the summer of 1969 he was transferred to Yokota AFB, Japan. The family stayed in the "patties," then moved to Johnson AFB where JAMES commuted one hour each way to work (this was only 15 miles). The twins, JAMES STOCKDILL and JOSEPH KIRBY, were born at Tachakawa AFB Japan on 30 May 1971. CHRISTOPHER graduated from Johnson High School on 8 June 1971, GARY graduated from Johnson High School on 9 June 1972. On 4 July 1972 James and the family return to the "ZI," the U.S. In August 1972 James was assigned to Wright Patterson AFB Dayton Ohio for one year. In September 1973 JAMES then went to CCK Taiwan for a period of three months and then to the Phillipine Islands for nine months -- a remote assignment. The family again moved to Grady, AR. DOLORES graduated from Grady High School 19 May 1974. In the fall of 1974 JAMES was assigned to Moody AFB Valdosta, GA for four years. His last assignment was Little Rock AFB Little Rock, AR in 1978. In August 1980, James retired with 30 years of active duty in the military. During his time in the Air Force he has worked on every type of aircraft built from 1950 to 1980. JAMES then went to work for CARTI -- the Central Arkansas Radiation Treatment Insitution -- in Little Rock in August 1980. JAMES was the Systems Engineer working on and building high frequency cancer treatment equipment. He retired from CARTI on 31 Dec. 1991. JAMES is a handyman. Everyone, including the kids, bring everything to Dad to fix. JAMES use to like to hunt (until he went to Vietnam). JAMES likes to fish. He did a lot of fishing until 1969. He has fished very little since. iv. ORVAL VAN "BUD" CHIDESTER, b. 3 Feb 1934, Arkansas; m. PAT BERRY; b. 7 Jun 1938; d. 13 Dec 1997. v.
