From '67

Jimmy Cronan sent in a stack of photos from his time in-country. Here is alittle of what he had to say about his first days.

March 26th, the 1st Sergeant said I would be going to the field on the evening chopper...We were taken to the heli-pad along with Charlie Company's mail and the evening's hot meal. Anderson and Couch were also aboard. Being my first helicopter ride, it was quite a thrill! The green carpet of the jungle was occasionally broken by a bomb crater. Some has thrown a purple grenade to mark the LZ -- which is in tall elephant grass. We helped to unload the chopper, then we were shown the way to the Company CP. Moving through the burned section of the jungle, I spotted an empty metal ammo box, a GI helmet, and numerous spent ammo brass. We met Captain Gunn, C Company's commander. He said the Battalion was in the first stage of Operation "Junction City" and that we were in Tay Ninh Province.

"Two hundred yards north of here is Cambodia," he said.

I was assigned to Lima (first) platoon. Lt. Larkin put ime in first squad.

Sergeant Fullerton, the 1st squad sergeant, put me with Stevens, a streetwise kid from Chicago and also with Jorge Muniz, a married guy from New York.

"So you're going to be my foxhole buddy?" stated Jorge.

"Yeah, I guess so."

The conversation carried on for a good while as we learned about each other.
