Robert and Matilda Payne of Ripley County, Missouri

SURNAMES: PAYNE, STEVENS, STEPHENS,WALKER, SULLIVAN,MCKINNEY, KIMBERLIN,RICHMOND, YARBROUGH, PHILLIPS, HOLLOWAY, GRIFFIN

Robert PAYNE was born about 1823 in Maury County, Tennessee. He married Matilda STEVENS/STEPHENS. Matilda was born about 1824 in Virginia. Family lore says that Matilda first married a man by the last name of Henry, and had one daughter Nancy Henry who was born in 1846, and then married Robert Payne as a widow. Robert and two of his other brothers, Daniel and Isaac C., came to Ripley County in the fall of 1841 in a group of 19 wagons from Hickman County, Tennessee. He settled in the area known as Simpsons Creek north of Doniphan, Missouri. He was a farmer all of his life. Robert Payne and his wife Matilda appear on the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 census of Ripley County. They died sometime between 1880 and 1900. They are buried in Payne/McGee Cemetery with both unmarked graves.

They had eight children:

Nancy Henry PAYNE was born March 4, 1846 in Missouri. She married James A. SULLIVAN. James A. SULLIVAN was born November 16, 1839 in Callaway County, Kentucky. They had three children: Jesse A., Emma J., and Permissa. Nancy Sullivan died February 25, 1914 and is buried in Oak Grove(Sullivan) Cemetery. James A. Sullivan died April 16, 1907 and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Emaline PAYNE was born in December of 1847 in Ripley County, Missouri. She married William T. WALKER on September 15, 1867 in Ripley County. William T. Walker was born May 25, 1847 in (TN, AL, MS?). That I know of they did not have any children, but that does not mean that they did'nt. They are listed on the 1870, 1876, 1880, and 1900 Ripley County census. William T. Walker was the brother of Lewis Johnson Walker. William T. Walker died October 28, 1900 at the home of his brother L.J. Walker on Simpsons Creek of brain fever. He was a farmer all of his life. He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery. Emaline Walker re-married to George MCKINNEY in 1902 in Ripley County.

Malissa PAYNE was born in April of 1850 in Ripley County, Missouri. She married Lewis Johnson WALKER on January 20, 1873 in Randolph County, Arkansas. After their marriage they moved back up to Ripley County. Lewis J. WALKER was born about 1851 in Tennessee. They are listed on the 1880, 1900, and 1910 census of Ripley County. Lewis was a farmer all of his life. He bought land in 1876. Lewis and Malissa had nine children: Emily J., Adela, Ophal, Callie, Luther, Rufus, Della, Nellie, and Lee. Malissa Walker died July 5, 1911 in Ripley County. She is buried in Payne/McGee Cemetery. In 1914 Lewis Walker re-married to Nancy E. (PAYNE) KIMBERLIN in Ripley County. They lived in Butler County, Missouri for 6 years until Lewis' death on May 10, 1920. He is buried in Black Creek cemetery in Harviel, Missouri.

George W. PAYNE was born about 1853 in Ripley County, Missouri. He married a Nancy in about 1870. They had eight children: William, Milburn, Viola, Infant, Nathan, Hardy, Emma, and Effie. They are listed on the 1880 census. George died sometime between 1892 and 1900. His wife is on the 1900 census. Not much is known on George yet.

Zebedee PAYNE was born February 10, 1858 in Ripley County, Missouri. He first married Sarah E. YARBROUGH. They had five children: Mollie, Ida Leona, Charles, Samuel, and Thomas. Sarah Payne died February 21, 1890 and she is buried in Payne/McGee Cemetary. Zebedee re-married to Emaline J. PHILLIPS. They had seven children: Mary, Effie, Ruben, Harry, Willie, Clyde Z., and Gladys. Zebedee died on November 12, 1922 in Ripley County. He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Matilda Elizabeth PAYNE was born July 24, 1858 in Ripley County, Missouri. She married William Butler RICHMOND on January 7, 1877 in Ripley County. They had the following children: William, James, Eliza, Ida, Mary, Thomas, John, Vina, David, Andrew, Henry, and Lueiza. Some of this family resided in Naylor, Missouri. Matilda died April 16, 1847 in Naylor, Missouri. She is buried in Ripley County.

Thomas Elijah PAYNE was born about January of 1862 in Ripley County, Missouri. He married Matilda HOLLOWAY in about 1881. They had the following children: Rob, Zeb, William, Marion, Susan, Mary, Andrew, Ruth, John, George, and James. I have no death information on Thomas.

Isaac Franklin PAYNE was born March 25, 1865 in Ripley County, Missouri. He married Molly Jane GRIFFIN in about 1888. They had seven children: Melvina, Carrie, Luther, Pearly, Daniel, Frankie, and Hazel. Isaac lived in the Ripley County area all of his life. He died on November 18, 1932 in Ripley County, Missouri. He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.
