Candle Magic Basics

One of the simplest forms of spell-casting is candle burning.  However, there must be a lot of thought put into the candle itself.  There are a few rules that you should follow:·    The candle should be an unused candle. ·    The color of the candle should reflect what you are using it for. ·    The candle should be dressed (anointed) with the appropriate oil.

·    Never blow a candle out.  Snuff it out with a candle snuffer, or pinch the flame out with moistened fingertips.

Now that we have gotten those rules out of the way, lets discuss the colors of the candles.  I realize that some discrepancies exist as to what color represents what, but you have to start somewhere so here is a basic list.  You can start with this and add to it as your experience grows:

·    White:      Spirituality and protection.

·

Red:  Energy, strength, courage, and passion.

·

Pink:   Love,  affection, and romance (not to be confused with the heat of a short term passionate encounter).

·

Yellow:  Intellectualism, imagination, memory, and creativity.  (I have to add here that I prefer to use a yellow candle for healing work as well, especially for banishing depressive illnesses).

·

Green:      Fertility, abundance, money, good luck, and regeneration.

·

Blue:         Inspiration, peace, occult wisdom, calming anxiety.

·

Purple:      Psychic abilities, spiritual power, focusing and centering.

·

Orange:     Ambition, career matters, and the law.

·

Brown:       Employment (finding a job), winning in court.

·    Silver:        Full Moon, wishing.

·    Gold:         Attracting wealth

Now that you have the basics in color choices, there are they types of candles to consider and always remember fire safety.  Never leave a candle burning unattended.

·

Votive candles: these usually burn 4-5 hours and come in a variety of colors.  (Caution: these must be burned in a votive holder). ·

·

Tapers: these are the most common forms of candles available just about anywhere.  They, too, come in a variety of colors and lengths.  The longer the candle the more burn time.  If a need a candle to burn for a specific number of days, I will buy a longer taper and carve equal sized  notches (or knobs) along the candle length.  (It is best to use a ruler so you can get exact measurements).  While I am carving the candle I focus on the purpose that the candle will be used for as this adds extra power to it.  Then I will burn one knob a day until the spell is finished.  Some people insert straight pins at various intervals to accomplish the same thing.  I just find it difficult to get the pins to go in easy or straight. ·

·

Glass Jar Candles:

These can sometimes be found in grocery stores or occult shops.  They come in a variety of colors and some even come ready for a specific purpose.  I prefer to get the plain glass jars with the appropriate wax color inside. ·

·

Image Candles:

These candles come in a variety of colors and they are of a specific image.  Some are shaped like a man, a woman, etc.  These are found at occult shops.  ·

·

  7 Knob candles:

These candles come in basic colors and are knobbed at intervals to be burned one knob at a time for a specific number of days.  Use these candles when you are working on a spell that is to last for a week.

·

Dressing or anointing your candles is done to establish a link between you and the candle and to add your energy to it (this is known as "charging the candle")  Some books will tell you to rub the oil in different directions for different results.  I have found the best way for me is this:  if I want to bring something to me, such as money, I will put the oil on my index finger tip and thumb and rub the oil in down the candle shaft toward me.  This will bring things to me.  If I want to get rid of something, such as an illness, I will rub the oil from the base of the candle to the tip going away from me.  (Other books may tell you other things, I am telling you what  has worked for me).  Again, you must experiment to determine what works best for you.  As you are anointing the candle, you should be speaking out loud the purpose for which you are burning the candle.  In doing magick, emotional charge is what energizes the candle with your desire.  The more emotion you can put into that charge, the more energy the candle will receive from you. There are numerous types of anointing oils.  The oil should also represent the purpose of the candle spell.  Over the years, I have learned to make my own oils, but you can find them at occult shops or on the web.Later on I will go into Candle Carving.  I love to do this, as well as make my own candles, but this is something that requires some skill, so don't just throw a bunch of old candles in a pot to melt.  This can be very dangerous.

                                       Candle Flames

As your candle burns, observe the flame closely because it will reveal things to you.  If your candle flame is:

·    Strong:  This indicates that the power and energy are going into your desires for manifestation.  This is a very good sign.
·
·    Weak flame:  This can show you are facing heavy opposition and must redo the magick several times in order to overcome the power you are facing.  The weak flame that goes out usually means you have missed your target altogether, start over and be more careful with your energy imbuing.
·
·    Jumping flames:  This is an attention getter...it can indicate raw emotions with explosions of energy, depending on the candle used and its intended purpose.

Rules for candle smoke and what it says to you

Smoke rising from your freshly lit candle flame:
If the smoke comes towards you first it has acknowledged your request or it may go in the direction it was taking your petition to...

If it goes to the North you will have to work for what you want.  Success will not be easy or rapid.  Perseverance is the key here.  In the case of health, it can mean the condition will get worse...Look to other omens for more information.

To the East:  Success comes through thought and strategy.  Carefully review the situation.  Patience is the key here.

To the South:  Success comes rapidly with your request...in the case of health, your recovery is imminent.

To the West:   If the smoke wafts to the West, the issue is too emotional.  Step back.  You are too involved...Look at the situation with a detached point of view to clear you mind.   Reanalyze...you are overlooking something.
