Made from a modern steel alloy that contains manganese,  Manganese allows the hardening process to go deeper into the body of the anvil.

It also gives you a tougher anvil, that's less likely to chip on the edges..

Anvils have a heavy coat of varnish on the face to protect them from rust during their ocean trip from Europe.
