One time in 1903 2 CONC it was the Mullings family turn to entertain on Sunday. The day 2 CONC before Grandmother was down on hands and knees scrubbing the floors. 2 CONC She was too tired to prepare anything but gravy and biscuits for 2 CONC supper. When everyone was seated around the table she said, "Be 2 CONC careful not to spill anything on the clean floor". My dad, David 2 CONC Arthur, who was four at the time, immediately spilled his plate of 2 CONC food on the floor. Grandmother said, "God Amighty Arthur, can't you 2 CONC do better than that?" One morning we 2 CONC were all up and Daddy and I were in the living room at Grandmother's 2 CONC house waiting for Grandmother and Mother to prepare breakfast. 2 CONT 2 CONT Uncle Russell came in from work at the Oil Mill. We were all three just laughing so hard. Then from 2 CONC the kitchen Grandmother said, "Russ, you shouldn't talk that way in 2 CONC front of that baby." 2 CONT I was that baby and I was fifteen years old. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 CONC --------------------------------------------- 2 CONT 2 CONT One day when my dad was seven or eight Granddad took him to town with 2 CONC him on a Saturday. When they arrived in town Granddad went to do his 2 CONC errands and Daddy went to the railroad depot, his favorite place, so 2 CONC he could slide down the loading dock. 2 CONT 2 CONT He did slide down the dock but forgot he had matches in his back 2 CONC overall pocket. The matches lit, burning a hole in his overalls and a 2 CONC blister on his bottom. He received a spanking on the other side of 2 CONC his bottom as he had been told repeatedly, "no matches". 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 CONC ------------------------------------------------ 2 CONT 2 CONT Thanksgiving 1943 or 1944 in Lubbock, Texas 2 CONT 2 CONT Grandmother was here for Thanksgiving. They were seated before the fireplace one night at Lola's 2 CONC home. Other members of the family had retired for the night. It was 2 CONC a custom of the times for the head of the family and his wife to 2 CONC occupy a bed in the room with the fireplace. Sometimes it was the 2 CONC only room in some of the frontier homes. In any case, smaller 2 CONC children were bedded down on pallets on the floor. The light from the 2 CONC fireplace was their only light. As the two were seated in the glowing 2 CONC and flickering light, Milton was chewing his tobacco and quite relaxed 2 CONC and happy. Tobacco chewers always took a lot of pride in their 2 CONC marksmanship when they spat their "ambeer" into the fireplace. Milton 2 CONC took good aim at his target. But the fire just sizzled a moment and 2 CONC died a complete death. Lola's father crawled out of bed and made 2 CONC Milton go home. 2 CONT 2 CONT Milton D. Mullings was granted a homestead on December 28, 1893 at the 2 CONC Camden, Montgomery County, Arkansas land office. See Document Section 2 CONC for copy of homestead. 2 CONT 2 CONT After teaching a short time in Arkansas at thirty dollars a month for 2 CONC the term of three months and having news of better salaries and plenty 2 CONC of jobs in Texas the Mullings boys decided to make the move to Texas. 2 CONC Having no families, Will and Wayne were the first ones to leave for 2 CONC Texas. Milton went later since he had a family and made the trip by 2 CONC wagon. About 1900 Milton drove the wagon loaded with all the 2 CONC household equipment that could be moved. Several head of horses and 2 CONC cattle were driven by a couple of young men who wanted to go along 2 CONC just for the trip. Johnson did not go with Milton but remained for a 2 CONC few days to dispose of what property that was not moved. Johnson made 2 CONC the trip by train. Johnson's future wife, Josephine had gone to Texas 2 CONC with her parents earlier. 2 CONT 2 CONT It is believed that Milton had polio which crippled one leg. Being 2 CONC the youngest he stayed at home and worked the crops as his father had 2 CONC become too old to do much of the farm labor. 2 CONT Farm machinery for the Mullings and others in the Mazarn Creek area 2 CONC had progressed no more than the common mouldboard breaking plow, the 2 CONC bull tongue and Georgia stock, and for more prosperous ones, the 2 CONC double shovel. The Mullings had always done the cultivating with the 2 CONC bull tongue and the Georgia stock which was a very slow way to plow a 2 CONC crop. Corn and cotton were both planted by a system which was called 2 CONC "checking." Furrows for planting were plowed at a distance of about 2 CONC thirty-two inches apart. Furrows were then plowed at right angles 2 CONC with the first ones and the same distance apart. The seed were hand 2 CONC planted where the furrows intersected, just like setting trees for an 2 CONC orchard. In that manner, the crops could be plowed from both 2 CONC directions. With only a bull tongue and Georgia stock, each row of 2 CONC corn required four furrows which was a very slow way of cultivation. 2 CONC Whereas, the double shovel was nothing more than two Georgia stocks 2 CONC combined into one plow. Some ambitious farmer had developed it in 2 CONC order that one man could do the work of two men. 2 CONT 2 CONT Johnson had seen one in operation and became sold upon the idea. Since 2 CONC he knew he was responsible for the entire crop, he began trying to 2 CONC sell the idea to his father to let him get a double shovel. Johnson 2 CONC had located one a man would sell for a couple of dollars because it 2 CONC had a broken part. Ples vetoed the plan from the beginning. Ples 2 CONC believed that one furrow at a time was all one man could manage with 2 CONC satisfaction. Since Ples rarely ventured into the field any more, 2 CONC Johnson traded for the plow and had the broken part repaired by a 2 CONC blacksmith. When it was tried in the field, it worked like a charm. 2 CONC Johnson was plowing the field in half the time it had been previously 2 CONC plowed. Finally, Ples walked out into the field and saw what was 2 CONC going on. After looking at the double shovel a moment and examining 2 CONC the work it had been doing, he said, "Well I'll declare. I believe the 2 CONC new way of farming is just as good as the old way." He walked slowly 2 CONC back to the house. Johnson said that was the last time Ples was ever 2 CONC in the field. 2 CONT 2 CONT Shortly after marriage Johnson bought 40 undeveloped acres from Texas 2 CONC Central Railroad Company. Home site was 3 miles northwest of Gorman. 2 CONC Gorman had a population of approximately 400 residents. There were 2 CONC three large mercantile business which dealt in everything from horses, 2 CONC mules, farm tools, dry goods and groceries to a good supply of patent 2 CONC medicines. There were 2 banks and 3 blacksmith shops. One blacksmith 2 CONC shop belong to Josephine's father, Napoleon Riffe. There were 3 2 CONC cotton gins, a couple of saloons and an opera house. 2 CONT 2 CONT Johnson built a 2 room single wall house. There were no closets or 2 CONC wardrobes, the clothes hung from pegs or nails in the wall. 2 CONT 2 CONT About 1908 Johnson moved his family to an 80 acre farm a mile east of 2 CONC Gorman. Johnson started a dairy business. He delivered milk and 2 CONC butter by wagon to all the regular customers he could handle. There 2 CONC was some cotton planted but most land was planted in feed crops for 2 CONC the dairy cows and horses. 2 CONT 2 CONT Lean years came to Johnson's family around 1913 or 1914. The Mexican 2 CONC boll weevil invaded the area. There was about a half crop the first 2 CONC year they came and a complete failure the second. Johnson changed to 2 CONC farming peanuts. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1917 Johnson acquired a 1915 Model-T ford. The first trip was a 2 CONC visit with Milton's family who had starved out at peanut farming a 2 CONC couple of years before and gone west and rented a farm near Lueders. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the early 1920's Johnson moved his family to the Aiken Community 2 CONC east of Plainview, Texas. He farmed both cotton and wheat. 1 SOUR @S19@ 1 SOUR @S20@ 2 PAGE page 128 2 QUAY 3 1 SOUR @S4@ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 19 APR 1880 2 PLAC Mazarn, Montgomery County, Arkansas 2 SOUR @S4@ 2 SOUR @S65@ 2 SOUR @S152@ 3 PAGE Copy of page received from Velma Mullings-Matthews 1 DEAT 2 DATE 16 APR 1954 2 PLAC Salinas, Monterey County, California 2 SOUR @S35@ 1 BURI 2 DATE AFT 16 APR 1954 2 PLAC Salinas, Monterey County, California 2 SOUR @S35@ 1 FAMS @F69@ 1 FAMC @F75@ 0 @I187@ INDI 1 NAME Josephine P. /Riffe/ 2 GIVN Josephine P. 2 SURN Riffe 1 SEX F 1 NOTE Josephine and her sister, Lillian Belle Riffe, married brothers, 2 CONC Johnson and William Mullings. 2 CONT Josephine was hearing impaired 1 SOUR @S20@ 1 SOUR @S35@ 1 SOUR @S4@ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 13 JUL 1879 2 PLAC Mt. B. Riffe as written by his daughter Lillian Belle Riffe, 2 CONC Mullings: 2 CONT 2 CONT Napoleon Bonaparte Riffe, son and fourth child of Benjamin Riffe was 2 CONC born February 10, 1848 at Rockwall, Texas. His father was a farmer, 2 CONC but also kept a blacksmith shop, and took care of the plows and farm 2 CONC implements for the other farmers of the community. 2 CONT 2 CONT Later the family moved to Hopkins County near Sulphur Springs where 2 CONC they lived for several years. The mother passed away when "Poly" as 2 CONC he was called, was 12 years of age. The father married again a year 2 CONC later. This was the turning point in Polys life. He could not see 2 CONC someone take his mothers place in the home. His life was not made 2 CONC pleasant for him by his stepmother and he soon left home. 2 CONT 2 CONT He worked for a man named John Davis for two years in Sulphur Springs 2 CONC in a blacksmith shop. He loved to tinker with guns and as Davis was a 2 CONC gunsmith too, he learned the trade from him. He listened to travelers 2 CONC tales of the West, and became fired with the desire to try the 2 CONC country. 2 CONT 2 CONT He had heard the tales of herds of cattle being driven to market at 2 CONC Abilene, Kansas so he soon drifted to cattle country. He became a 2 CONC cowboy helping with the droves that were taken over the trail. Many 2 CONC were his experiences. Sometimes the herds were stampeded by Indians 2 CONC and both cows and horses driven off. 2 CONT 2 CONT Once they were surprised by a band of Cherokees and in the skirmish 2 CONC his saddle horn was shot off. Another time he turned back from a trip 2 CONC to Abilene on account of being sick. He rode several days alone. He 2 CONC stopped one day to rest under the shade of a live oak tree and went to 2 CONC sleep. He was awakened by the snort of his horse. He sensed danger 2 CONC and placed his gun in readiness. Presently the grass stirred and with 2 CONC a grunt an Indian raised up. The sedge grass was almost as high as 2 CONC his head. He fired and the Indian fell back. Not waiting to 2 CONC investigate he hurriedly mounted his horse and galloped away. 2 CONT 2 CONT He volunteered for service in the Civil War which was in its last 2 CONC year. He was assigned to a company stationed at Camden, Arkansas. 2 CONC Horse shoeing being greatly needed he was put in a special shop for 2 CONC the horses of the officers. He was there when Lee surrendered. 2 CONT 2 CONT He then opened a blacksmith shop for himself in Camden, Arkansas. 2 CONC Later he went to Gurdon, Arkansas to work. 2 CONT 2 CONT Here he met and married Martha Stricklin in January 1872. His father 2 CONC had moved to Gurden and was in the blacksmith shop there. 2 CONT 2 CONT His wife lived with her cousins John & Emily Avery. Mr. Avery was 2 CONC much in need of farm help and persuaded Poly to stay on for the year 2 CONC and he would give them room and board. The next year he rented land 2 CONC and decided to farm for himself. Their first child James Freddie 2 CONC Riffe was born December 26, 1872. 2 CONT 2 CONT After two years he decided to move back to Gurdon and he and his 2 CONC father became partners in a blacksmith shop. Next he moved to 2 CONC Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He was appointed jailer for the county. He 2 CONC held this job for four years. A daughter, Lillian Belle was born here 2 CONC July 18, 1875. 2 CONT 2 CONT He moved then to Montgomery County to a small town Black Springs. He 2 CONC and a partner, B.M. Rawton, opened up a general blacksmith shop. This 2 CONC was a good farming country and they did well. Five more children were 2 CONC born. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the spring of 1889 the family moved to the little mining town of 2 CONC Silver City twenty miles away where he was employed by the Diamond Joe 2 CONC mining company to keep the tools in good working shape. 2 CONT 2 CONT After a short time they moved to the county seat Mt. Ida. School 2 CONC advantages were better here. The Mt. Ida Normal Academy was just 2 CONC being established by Professor John L. McConnell of Carbondale, 2 CONC Illinois. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1890 a tragedy occurred in the family in the death of the son- 2 CONC Freddie. He had left home and was working in the Railroad Shops in 2 CONC North Little Rock, Arkansas, where he was drowned in the Arkansas 2 CONC River one Sunday afternoon while swimming with other boys. 2 CONT 2 CONT Poly formed a partnership with a Mr. Henderson and they opened a 2 CONC general blacksmith shop and also did wood work. They became staunch 2 CONC friends and worked together a number of years. 2 CONT 2 CONT The family was almost wiped out in the summer of 1898 by typhoid 2 CONC fever. Only two children were left - Lillian and Josie - then young 2 CONC ladies. 2 CONT 2 CONT Lillian was married in the fall of 1898 to W. H. Mullings of Mazarn, 2 CONC Arkansas. They were married in Gorman, Texas where Lillian had come 2 CONC to join her fiance who had preceded her. 2 CONT 2 CONT They began to teach school in Texas. In another year Poly and wife 2 CONC Martha and Josie joined them and settled at Gorman, Texas. 2 CONT 2 CONT Poly again opened a general blacksmith shop taking John Purdy as his 2 CONC partner. They installed the first trip-hammer in that part of the 2 CONC country. He took up the hobby of collecting old guns and was always 2 CONC in the market for such. He owned the pistol that killed Abraham 2 CONC Lincoln. His display was very interesting and attracted quite a bit 2 CONC of curiosity among travelers. 2 CONT 2 CONT His shop and collection was burned in 1917 when a whole block of the 2 CONC town was destroyed by fire. He retired from active work after this. 2 CONC His wife had passed away and he made his home with his daughter 2 CONC Lillian. 2 CONT 2 CONT He was a member of the Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, and also 2 CONC the Odd Fellows, being active in all of these at the time of his death 2 CONC which occurred March 29, 1926. He was buried in the Gorman Cemetery 2 CONC beside his wife. 2 CONT 2 CONT 1 SOUR @S20@ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 10 FEB 1848 2 PLAC Rockwall, Rockwall County, Texas 2 SOUR @S4@ 1 DEAT 2 DATE 29 MAR 1926 2 PLAC Gorman, Eastland County, Texas 2 SOUR @S4@ 1 BURI 2 DATE MAR 1926 2 PLAC Gorman Cemetery 2 NOTE Napoleon is buried beside his wife. 2 SOUR @S4@ 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Military 2 PLAC Civil War 2 NOTE He volunteered for service the last year of the war. Its original territory included the present county of Jefferson 2 CONC and that part of Walker County east of the Sipsy fork of the Black 2 CONC Warrior River. Blount lies in the northeastern section of the State 2 CONC of Alabama known as the mineral region. It was named for Willie G. 2 CONC Blount of Tennessee, Governor of that State during the Creek Indian 2 CONC War of 1813-14. 2 CONT 2 CONT Blount was first opened to settlement by the event of the Creek War in 2 CONC 1813-14 when Tennessee troops opened a wagon road to Baird's Bluff, 2 CONC which is near the Blount County line. General John Coffee's troops 2 CONC marched through Brown's Valley and Blountsville in their campaign 2 CONC against the Black Warrior Town. In this way, many Tennesseans became 2 CONC familiar with the area and at the close of the war, sought homes 2 CONC there. 2 CONT 2 CONT The first settlers came in wagons during the fall of 1816 from 2 CONC Tennessee. In 1818 and 1819 South Carolina families settled in the 2 CONC county in great numbers, and have left a permanent impression upon the 2 CONC history of the county. Blount County is known for its fruit, 2 CONC especially its apples. 2 CONT 2 CONT MILITARY: 2 CONT Stephen served in the Revolutionary War in the Dragoons Div. of 2 CONC Virginia Continental Line. 2 CONT In June 1999 bronze markers were issued by the Federal Government for 2 CONC forty five Revolutionary War Veterans, who were pioneer settlers of 2 CONC Blount County, Alabama. Markers have been installed and dedicated 2 CONC with appropriate ceremonies. 2 CONT Stephen D. Mullings is listed as: 2 CONT Stephen Mullens, S. C. Militia, Remlap Cemetery . 2 CONT On Stephen Mullings' Revolutionary War papers, his last name is 2 CONC spelled "Mullins" and "Mullings". Stephen was described as a tall 2 CONC man. 2 CONT 2 CONT RESIDENCE: The family moved from Virginia to North Carolina to 2 CONC Tennessee and to South Carolina before finally settling in Blount 2 CONC County, Alabama. 2 CONT 2 CONT Stephen stayed in touch with his relatives in Tennessee, Kentucky, and 2 CONC North Carolina. The children of Stephen and Samuel Mullings visited 2 CONC back and forth for extended periods. The young men of the family went 2 CONC on hunting and trapping trips to Kentucky and Tennessee every fall 2 CONC when it was too cold to farm. One of Stephen's cousins, John 2 CONC Mullings, moved his family to Blount County for awhile to be nearer to 2 CONC Stephen's family. 2 CONT 2 CONT Stephen raised horses and the family also collected and sold skins. 2 CONC Locally the family was famous over several generations for goat and 2 CONC cow cheese making. The family also valued education and even 2 CONC relocated to Blount County from northern Alabama so the children would 2 CONC not have as far to walk to school. Stephen Mullings did not support 2 CONC the War of 1812 and sent two of his sons to stay with family rather 2 CONC than allowing them to enlist in the Blount County militia going to New 2 CONC Orleans. 2 CONT 2 CONT Eighty acres of the original Mullings farm (Stephen's settlement) at 2 CONC Remlap was kept in the family and farmed until the Depression. It had 2 CONC to be sold during the Depression for taxes. The family held onto 2 CONC forty acres of land on Pine Mountain. This farm at Armstead was taxed 2 CONC cheaply because it was so steep and rocky. The family could afford 2 CONC the taxes on this land so they moved there. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT From Alabama Records Volume 204 Blount County: 2 CONT 2 CONT Birth: October 31, 1760, correct date, according to veteran's son. His 2 CONC surname was recorded as Mullings on copies of all old family records. 2 CONT 2 CONT Service: According to the statement made by this veteran when he 2 CONC applied for pension in October 1832, he rendered the following 2 CONC service: He enlisted in the year 1779, served 2 years in Captain 2 CONC Edmund Reed's (Read's) Company, Colonel John Nelson's Regiment of 2 CONC Virginia Dragoons and was discharged about one month before the 2 CONC Surrender of Cornwallis. He joined General Lafayette's Army in 2 CONC Virginia and was stationed at Richmond, Williamsburg, and Petersburg. 2 CONT 2 CONT MILITARY PENSION: Pension Certificate No. 7 947 was issued April 23, 2 CONC 1833 to Stephen Mullins, rate $100 per annum, act of June 7, 1832, 2 CONC Alabama Agency, Pension Certificate No. 11 696 was issued July 25, 2 CONC 1854 to Dorcas Mullins, deceased, widow of Stephen Mullings, rate $100 2 CONC per annum, act of July 7, 1838, Huntsville, Ala.
