He was married to Joanna TERRY about 1775 in Virginia.
(2) Joanna TERRY
(3) was born about 1754 in Virginia.(2)
She died after 1827 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.
(4) In 1823, a sign was posted throughout Virginia that there was
a wagon trail through Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Six of Joanna's
children and their families, along with Joanna, packed up and moved to Rutherford
County, Tennessee.
The story is told in the family that Joanna, during that trip, rocked in her
big rocking chair that John had carved for her. When one of her sons said, "Momma,
get on the wagon. It is time to go." Joanna asked, "Where does my
rocker go?" When she was told there was no room for her rocker, she said,
"If my rocker doesn't go, I don't go." So her rocker was tied to one
of the animals. It is said that the first item taken off every afternoon and
the last item put on every morning was Joanna's rocker. It is said that she
rocked her way across Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. They arrived
in Rutherford County, Tennessee, in 1824.
About 1840, there was a falling out among Joanna's children and grandchildren.
Part of them stayed in Rutherford County; others went to Gibson County, Tennessee;
