How To Wear Hijab

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim

These are simple instructions (insha’Allah) for putting on two types of hijab. One is the square or triangle hijab, and the other is the rectangular dupatta. These methods are only two of many, and these may be modified for your comfort. Our basic goal is to have the scarf cover the hair, ears, and neck. We also want to ensure that it stays in place. I am accompanying these instructions with pictures of my 4-year-old because a visual image may be useful.

Step 1

If you have a triangle shaped scarf, move on to step 2. If you have a square shaped scarf, begin by folding it in half to form a large triangle.

Step 2

Drape the scarf across the top of your head with the long folded side of the triangle lying across your forehead and the point of the triangle hanging down your back.

Step 3

With each hand, hold the folded edge of the scarf hanging beside your face. Tuck these side pieces behind your ears.

Step 4

Some of the scarf should fall forward across the ears. Hold the parts that fall forward using each hand.

Step 5

Pull your hands forward and meet both sides of the scarf under your chin. Pin these pieces together using a safety pin or decorative pin. Tuck in any loose pieces of hair that may be showing at the sides.

Step 6

This is should result in a securely placed hijab.
