100 Million pigs are slaughtered in the U.S. every year. When they are born their tails are cut, their snouts smashed and their ears cut without anesthetic or pain reliever. Their tails are cut so they do not bite their tail out of stress. Their snouts are smashed so they can not ram their noses into into others causing bruses and scars. Their ears are cut for identification.
After 2 to 3 weeks they are taken away from their mothers and aproximatiey 15% will die. The living pigs are crowded into metal pens with cold cement floors. They stay in this confinement until they reach 250lbs at 6 months where they are taken to the slaughterhouse.
The air is thick with dander dust and noxious gas. The pigs have to live their entire lives in here, where as workers who spend only a few hours a day in theese farms were found to have breathing problembs.
The hogs are plagued by a variety of diseases such as swine athritis caused by the harsh concrete floors, lack of exercise, and confinement, salmonellosis, TGE, bratislava, obesity, and crippled leg disease.
Breeding sows are expected to live constantly in a cycle of impregnation and birth. No piglettes means no money. The sows have over 20 piglets per year. The sows are kept in small pens where they hardly have room to stand up and lie down. They get sore shoulder because they are forced to stand on the bare floor. After giving birth they nurse for 2 or three weeks and then the sow is taken to be reimpregnated. When the sow is no longer able to breed she is sent to the slaughter house.
Pigs experience overcrowded housing as well as over crowded transportation. They overload trucks to save $0.25 a head but it actually ends up contributing to the deaths of 80 000 hogs a year.
When they get to the slaughter house they are supossed to be stunned but it is ver imprecise and the conscince animals are hung upside down by their back legs kicking and struggling and bled to death. This sometimes does not fully kill the animal so it does not die until it is dipped in scalding hot water where it is boiled alive.
