Chicken and Turkey

Ten billion chickens and half a billion turkeys are killed in the U.S. every year. These birds are crowded into huge warehouses where they can barely move. Chickens have less than half a square foot of space and turkeys have less than three square feet. Both birds are de-beaked without anesthic and turkeys have their toes cut off so they can not scratch.

Chicken has been genetically altered to grow double the size in half the time. Chickens grow so fast that their hearts and lungs are not developed well enough to support the rest of their body which results in congestive heart failure. They also experience crippling leg disorders because their legs are not capable of supporting their genetically mutated bodies. They also suffer from heat prostration, infectious disease and cancer.

Turkeys are also genetically mutated. They have also been mutated to grow double the size in half the time but they are also mutated to grow bigger breasts for the demand for white meat. Because of these abnormally large chests they are not able to reproduce so their only way of reproduction is artificial insemination. Turkeys are also susceptible to heart disease and crippling leg diseases. Turkeys have problems standing and fall and are trampled or getting bruises and abrasions.

The birds are taken to the slaughter house in metal cages stacked in the back of trucks. They are pulled from the crates or are lifted off the truck by a crane and are dumped onto conveyor belts. Thousands of birds are killed every hour. Fully conscience birds are hung by their feet by chains on a moving rail.

The first place they go to is the stunning tank where their heads are put into an electrified bath of water. This is often inadequate as the electricity is not a high enough shock to fully stun the birds. Next the birds throats are slashed by a mechanical blade which does not kill all birds but just injures them. Next they are taken to the scalding tank where many are boiled alive.
