Calls for a clampdown on religious slaughter of livestock have been rejected by the Government. Earl Ferrers, Minister of State for Agriculture, told the House of Lords that he was aware of an apparent increase in religious slaughter. But the exemption from the pre-slaughter requirement in the Slaughterhouses Act applied to any slaughtering of animals for the food of Jews or Moslems provided the conditions laid down in the Act were met.
Lord Houghton of Sowerby had raised the issue by asking whether the Government was aware of the “escalating exploitation” of the immunities granted to religious minorities under the legislation. He wanted the Government to advise local authorities concerned with planning and licensing applications for slaughter of animals for export to get agreement from the applicants to the pre-stunning requirements imposed on all other slaughterings in the United Kingdom.
Worth more dead than alive... Export success was the reason for a recruiting campaign at Stoneleigh by Quantock Veal. The Somerset company was looking for 70 more contract rearers to meet French demand for British veal. The calves go out as meat. That is economically important. Sent live to the Continent 300,000 British calves are worth about £27 million. Feed them, kill them at 16 weeks and export the carcasses. Then they will bring in £75 million. That’s added value. That’s marketing...
..being cast in the rotary pen and having had their throats cut, were dragged out of the pens very much alive and kicking. Vast amounts of blood still flowed from the animal and was spread around the killing area. Any person not familiar with this practice would be shocked and appalled to witness such inhumane treatment of animals in this country. How much longer must we stand by and allow these practices to continue?
Slaughterhouse The horror of the Nazi death-camps still lingers on till today, fresh from the days of ‘43. The stench of burning bodies, the rivers of congealed -blood swirling at the feet of the executioner. The sounds ripping at the mind, anguished, terrified shrieks, the cold cracking of bones, the sterile steel cutting, tearing at the living flesh. Sounds to chill the spine, the remembrance of Auschwitz or the daily reality of the abettor?
Slaughterhouse sights (part one):-— “There are at lease 20 pigs bundled in to a small pen, all screaming, clawing at each other, others just standing motionless in a state of ultimate fear. All awaiting the terror of their comrades. At the opening of the enclosures a man standing, grinning, flaying. One by one the piglets are grabbed from within the pen, then with no seen emotion — he gouges a bale into the main artery of the throat. Almost simultaneously the young animal is hoisted upwards, buckets of crimson blood gush from the dying piglet swaying on the chain. The sight/sound/smell. The supposedly ‘dead’ animal is then dropped into a tank of boiling water to be cleaned, decapitated and hung for the Sunday dinner. Ham/pork/bacon/pain/terror/death.” THINK!
Slaughterhouse sights (part two):-— “Once again the smiling butcher is taking life, lives of the innocent. The cattle are ‘stunned’ with a pneumatic bolt striking deep into the head, it falls to the ground, is then hoisted above. The stunned animal begins to regain consciousness, it begins to kick, to sway its head, it falls to the ground. The slaughter man slices a six inch cut to the throat, the intense shockwave of pain shoots through the young animal’s body, who is desperately trying to escape further pain. Once again the red river of blood flows out over the sterile concrete floor. Almost next to the doomed cattle are freshly hung carcasses, cauldrons of ‘unusable’ organs being savaged by swarms of flies. Livers, intestines, hearts, kidneys hang on the walls, reminiscent of a car assembly line. Opposite, heads impaled on metal posts. The freshly hung split carcasses are still twitching with pain, even 15 minutes after death.” THINK!
1. Man can easily sustain himself on a diet of vegetables, fruit, stc: without the need for any meat or meat by-products.
2. Eating meat can produce many health complaints (such as heart disease, various forms of cancer, infection of the bowels etc:) transmit diseases
3. Meat is one of the dearest food products to buy.
4. It is impractical to grow both crops, which are fed to livestock, which is then slaughtered, which is then used for human consumption, when you only need to harvest the crop for consumption. It also makes more land available especially when the population is steadily rising.
5. Most religions condemn the eating of meant. For example: “for meat, destroy not the work of God. All things are pure; but it is evil for that man who eats with offence" —Romans XIV:9. Also, “Thou shalt not destroy in My Holy Mountain—Isiah XI:VI It is even one of the Ten Commandments.
Yet still 400,000,000,000 animals are slaughtered for food, another 300,000,000 for their pelts, another 1,000,000 for ‘sport’ For example, over 1,000,000 lambs are born in Britain alone, and over half are killed at 6 months. Every time you eat your breakfast of bacon, egg and sausage, or when you pop into MacDonalds for a quick snack, YOU are creating that marker. YOU are creating the pain, terror and suffering that make up the short miserable life and inevitable death.
IS YOUR CONSCIENCE CLEAR? You only use words like mutton, beef, ham so cover up the fact that all you’re really eating is dead, decaying animal flesh.. Would you still eat that meat if it were you who had to smash the skulls, disembowel, strangle, wrench, cut, ski that 10 day old calf for the sake of veal and ham pie?
You tell me of excuses of tradition. At Easter it is tradition to have turkey, whilst at the same time you are admiring the cute fluffy chick on the Easter egg wrapper. And as Easter Christ is supposed to have risen from the dead, but I don’t think those millions of slaughtered animals will rise from the dead, and if they ever did would they be so forgiving?
