The McGinness Family

Headstone inscriptions and newspaper abstracts make up the sum of the information known to me on the McGinnes family. I will be doing some looking at census records, etc. to see if I can locate this family in Baxter or Fulton County, Arkansas.

Edward Napoleon McGinness Headstone

The full inscription reads:

Asleep in Jesus
POLEON
McGINNES
NOV. 8, 1872
MAR. 14, 1909
Gone, but not forgotten.

This large grey granite stone measures x x. The top of this large marker has an open bible on the slanted surface and roses under the wording 'Asleep in Jesus'. McGINNESS is engraved in large letters on a separate large base.

It is located in a section at the back right side of the cemetery a few rows from the back. When facing the stones, Poleon is on the right, Callie is on the left and Everette is in between the two. Graves nearby include:

Callie Thomas McGinness Headstone

The full inscription reads:

Asleep in Jesus
MRS. CALLIE
McGINNESS
NOV. 30, 1879
JULY 13, 1936
A true mother and a faithful friend.

This large grey granite stone measures x x and is a perfect match for Poleon's with the same embellishments, etc. A footstone is engraved with 'C. M.'

When facing the stones (and the gate to the cemetery), Callie is on the left, Poleon is on the right, and Everette is in between the two. Callie's marker is the first on this end of the row. Graves nearby include: (reportedly) her sister, Francis Thomas who is said to be buried at the foot of Callie's grave.

The July 17, 1936, issue of the "Baxter Bulletin" read as follows (abstract):
Died Mrs. Callie McGinnis, born November 30, 1881, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas. She married January 23, 1903 to Edward N. McGinnis. They had two sons Everett, who died December 1, 1921 and John who survives. She also leaves two sisters Miss Frances Thomas of Mountain Home and Mrs. Eliza Winn of Big Flat, two brothers Jim Thomas of Big Flat and W. F. Thomas of Claremore, Oklahoma. She died July 13, in a Little Rock Hospital."

Everette McGinness Headstone

The full inscription reads:

EVERETTE
McGINNESS
APR. 27, 1904
DEC. 1, 1920
A fairer bud of promise
never bloomed.

This large grey granite stone measures x x. The top of this large marker has McGinniss engraved on the slanted top surface. A footstone is engraved with 'E. M.'

The December 3, 1920, issue of the "Baxter Bulleting" reported (abstract): Everett McGinniss, son of Mrs. Callie McGinnis of Gamaliel, died on Tuesday. His father, Napoleon McGinnis, died a number of years ago. Everett died of Typhoid Fever and was buried in Fluty Cemetery.
