Lung Surgery April 2001

On March 23rd I got up to get the kids off to school as usual...
Nothing different about the way I felt until I returned home from taking the kids to school...I lay on the sofa and started to shake with cold chills so bad my teeth chattered..
My temp got up to 104 causing me to talk out of my head..I drank 7-up, had a cold rag on my head and could barely make it to the bathroom...
This went on for 24 hours..I could see that I was not getting any better..

On the 24th I decided I must go to the emergency room for I was almost sure I had pneumonia..The x-ray was done and it was confirmed that I did have pneumonia..
I was admitted to the hospital..I started to feeling better after a couple of days of medication given through an IV..
Another x-ray was done after a few days of being there to see if the pneumonia had improved since I felt much better..

The Dr. came in and told me the Radiologist did not like the looks of my x-ray and was assuming the worse..<<>>
A lung specialist was now called in and a biopsy done..The specialist went down into my lungs for the biopsy and a bronchi wash...
He told me it looked like pneumonia to him but we would have to wait for the cancer results to come back to make sure..
The following morning my regular Dr came in and asked me if I was ready to go home and of course I was and that was pretty much giving me good results on the biopsy report..
He then said wait up--I need to go check something...He then left the room to use a phone that was just outside my room...
I heard him telling whoever he was speaking to that was the best news he had heard all day..
Of course I knew that the conversation was about me and the results of my test..He then went on and I assumed I was about to be released..

I asked a nurse several hours later if I was ever going to get a wheel chair brought in so that I could leave...
At that time she told me I had a 10pm x-ray ordered by the lung specialist and could not leave..The following morning the lung Dr made his rounds and told me I could not leave that my test came back lung cancer and a surgeon would have to be called in..
A few minutes after he left my room, my regular Dr walked in and asked me if I was ready to go...
I replied by saying<<<<>>>>He was pretty shocked to hear what the lung Dr had just told me..
He told me several times that he was sorry for not reading my chart before he came in that morning...
He went out of the room and returned a moment later with my chart..

A surgeon was called and surgery was done..2 lobes removed out of my right lung..I was told I would be in ICU for 2 days and released for home on the 5th day...
WRONG--I was in ICU for 1 week and released after the 10th day..Giving me a total of 22 days in the hospital..
I had a blood transfusion, the other lobe on the right side collapsed after surgery..
Other complications making me wonder if I'd ever get better..My breathing was horrible..The Dr. told me I have lots of emphysema...

A couple of days before my release the surgeon came in to my room and told me there was a chance that he had just removed pneumonia from me..
He said no cancer showed in what was removed and the 2 lobes had been sent to Houston, Texas to a cancer center for test to see if any cancer could be found...
Well, I lost the biggest part of my right lung to a not needed surgery...I now have horrible nerve damage and will have to be checked regular to see if cancer has shown up in my lungs since I do have abnormal cancer cells...
The Dr told me that I was going to have cancer someday therefore regular x-rays and scans will have to be done to watch my lungs for cancer..........
