Grunge hit offers indie heroine chance to help Scots musicians

The bond forged between Scottish indie popsters and the grunge giants Nirvana could provide a boost for rick music north of the Border.

The late Kurt Cobain was the Glasgow band's biggest fan-securing a mega deal with Nirvana's U.S. label Sub Pop, and even including some of their songs in Nirvana's live set.

And it was no surprise when a tune penned by the Vaselines' key members Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee - cropped up on the live Nirvana unplugged album.

Now, the royalties earned from the track Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam are being ploughed back into the music scene.

While Eugene went on to form Eugenius, Frances became disillusioned by the music business and spent six years as a primary school teacher. Now she's back with a new band - Suckle - a new record label and a fierce determination to promote Scottish music talents.

"I was shocked when I heard they were going to use the track on the Nirvana album," admits 31-year -old Frances. "But I'm determined not to waste this potential - I've always believed what goes around comes around.

"I want to use my resources to further the incredible artistic talent that exists in Glasgow."

The first release on Frances' label,Left Hand Recordings, is the New Suckle Single Cybilla, out on March 2. That's followed by a compilation by the cream of the city's DJ-ing talent.

But it's not just Glasgow's musical talent this West End girl is intent on knocking into shape.

Frances holds weekly classes as a fully - qualified yoga teacher. The sessions are proving so popular, however, she's reluctant to reveal where the groups are held.

Frances laughs: "The last session was so busy it was a bit like stadium yoga!"

She also reveals her disillusionment with the music business around the time of The Vaselines split has mellowed somewhat as of late.

"I've just had my astrological chart done and it turns out there are two sides to me," she says.

"One is the educational side and the other is the performing side - I guess up to now they've been struggling.

"But now, with the yoga classes and my new band and record label, I think I've struck the perfect balance."
