What's Going On Up There?
You've finally decided that you need a new roof, just look at the terrible condition it's in! Black and green stuff all over, it must be totally rotten! You can't imagine why it hasn't already started leaking!
Well guess what. Your roof may not be in as bad a shape as it "appears" to be in! Many roof's located across North America have been "infected" with a disease! And if left untreated it will cause permanent damage to the shingles and can even reach down to the decking.
This disease is caused by a fungus spore, which is airborne in nature, that has been transmitted by the wind from the Gulf Coast region of the United States! The spore just happened to land on you roof sometime in the past, took root, and with just the right amount of moisture and shade to keep it alive, has been growing each year every since! More than likely, the affected area is the "northern" side of your home, and if you have a lot of shade, the fungus may have grown into a full grown moss! Since the spore is a live plant, it's roots are digging into the organic base of your shingles, and it is now feasting on them!
Not only is this fungus shortening the life of your roof, but it is also causing your utility bill to rise! The fungus absorbs both moisture and heat, which is trapped against the roof surface. This layer of trapped heat can caused the temperature on the inside of your roof surface to be 10-20% hotter than normal, which requires you to run your air conditioning longer and more often to cool your living area!
And we haven't even mentioned the ugly appearance the fungus is giving your home!
Now that's the bad news!
The good news is that you may not need to replace your roof, it just needs to be cleaned by a professional roof cleaner....or maybe you want to take care of the problem yourself!
My company has been in the roof cleaning business over four years now, and we charge a reasonable price to clean roofs in our trade area, and there may be a company in your area that can provide a quality service for you. But!....be careful that the cleaning company does not use high pressure cleaning methods on you roof, as this may void your manufacturer's warranty! And if you want to save a lot of money, you can do this job yourself!
I started my roof cleaning business over four years ago after I cleaned my own roof! I decided it was so easy and there were a lot of dirty roofs in this part of the country! To do the job yourself, return to my Home Page or to find out more about doing it yourself, check out my book "How To Clean Your Roof & Give Your Home A New Look!"
