How to pronounce Piatt, Pyeatt, Pyatt, Pyeatte

From: Marianne Cowan Pyeatt
Our Missouri/Arkansas Pyeatts pronounce it Py-ET most of the time. But, some of the older ones say it more like Pight or PY-it. However, none of us say it like Py-OT the way some northerners do.

As a boy in my family it was Pie'-it, and the only time I ever heard Pee-ott' was at an aunts graduation. When I went into the military I was called Pee-ott'. Coming home most of the family had also changed to saying "Pee-ott'". As you can see not even the Piatts' know how to say their name, But we're still good people. David Piatt Shelby Twp., Mich.

My Dad and his family (from western WV) pronounce it pie'-it but here in Toronto, actually at my daughters school, there is a family named Piette and they pronounce it Pee-et'-ee. I have also heard pee'-ott. Robin

Well, I'm from the Pyeatte side and we always pronounced it Pie' ut. I love hearing all these different pronunciations. No wonder the name is spelled so many different ways! Denise Swift

From: "ed pyeatt" ned_ludd@webtv.net Those of you who have not, at some point, (especially over the P/A) been called "Pirate, Peet, Pu-yat, Pit, Patti, Pie-to. Pee-yut, Pyie-yet, Put", etc., have not lived yet, and should be grateful for your good fortune. In TX, we prefer Pight or Pah-ut, honest. Really, somewhere in between the two. . . Yours, for the greater good, Ed Pyeatt
