William W and Catherine ? Pyeatt

William W Pyatt was born January 8, 1855 (or Jan 1852) in Missouri. He was the son of John and Julia Hornsby Pyatt. He is buried in the Calvary Cemetery, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri. William married c1876/1877 Catherine ? who was born in November of 1858 in Missouri to Irish parents (or, they were born in Maryland).

William and Catherine had the following known children:

In 1900 and in 1910 Catherine claimed to have had a total of 10 children. Eight were still living in 1900 and seven in 1910. Therefore, it would seem that one or two could have been born before Mary and another at some other juncture. Their names and dates of birth and death may never be known to us. I feel that one of the children is likely the Julia Catherine Pyatt who died August 14, 1878 (14 days old) #3023 Gratiot. This street also had other Pyatt families (none at that exact number), but, William and Catherine are the most likely parents. The child that died between 1900 and 1910 was Thomas who drowned in 1901 according to the death register of St. Louis.

According to his death certificate, William had moved to St Louis about 45 years previous or c1855. However, we know that he was still with his parents in Franklin County on the 1860 census. The main problem here is that Catherine places the year of his birth at 1855 - which is probably what he always told her. However, unless John and Julia's son who was 2 on the 1850 census and 12 on the 1860 census had died and they had a son born c1855 whom they also named William who did not appear with them as a five-year-old - then I have to say that the death certificate year of birth (and likely his headstone) is in error. Perhaps a ten year gap in their ages was perceived by William to be too large and he shaved off a few years.

I do not have William on the 1870 census, I assume he is with his 'missing' parents. If he had moved to St Louis as a 20-year-old, that would have been c1868 based on his true age. Therefore, a thorough search of the St Louis census may find this family.

I find William and Catherine enumerated on the 1880 census of St Louis City, St Louis County, Missouri, as follows:

This family was enumerated #53/61 #3113 Gratiot Street (Ancestry.com image 7/9). At #53/62 were Arthur and Mary Harrison. Also on Gratiot Street at #2915 was William's brother, Jacob Pyeatt and at #3307? (4 houses away) was Eldridge F Pyatt - their first cousin.

By the 1900 census William's family had grown and appeared in St Louis City, St Louis County, Missouri as follows:

This family lived at #3114 Chouteau Avenue in St Louis and was enumerated 93/211/12/89. At #1307 Boyle was Jacob Pyeatt and family and at #$4432 Hunt was Eldridge F Pyatt. William had only aged 18 years between 1880 and 1900. At this point, he is giving his year of birth as 1852 (closer to the truth).

By the 1910 census William's family appeared as follows:

  • Pyatt, William age 55 born MO / married1 for 33 years / father born MO/mother born VA
  • Pyatt, Catherine (wife) age 52 born MO / married1 for 33 years / father/mother born IRE / 10 children/7 living
  • Pyatt, Hazle (daughter) age 19 born MO / single / father/mother born MO
  • Pyatt, Marguerite (daughter) age 17 born MO / single / father/mother born MO
  • Pyatt, Beatrice (daughter) age 13 born MO / single / father/mother born MO
  • Pyatt, William (son) age 10 born MO / single / father/mother born MO

This family was enumerated 21 Apr 1910 #148/200 at 4217 Swan Avenue 10th Supr Dist Enum 354 part of Ward 23. On ancestry image 18 of 32. Since Katherine claims that seven of her children are living. We must assume assume that Mary and Alice B are married and might be found in proximity to their parents. Also, Thomas W should still be alive and enumerated somewhere. William is closing the gap to Catherine's age - now appearing only 3 years older. It had been eight and then seven and now three.

There is no doubt that these last three census entries are for the same couple. However, the January 1852 birth date for William and the 1855 birth year do not exactly agree with the birth year of c1848 for the son of John and Julia. However, I note that he only aged 18 years from the 1880 census to the 1900 census while he aged 7 years from 1900 to 1910. So, possibly there are descrepancies here that do not preclude him being the son of John and Julia.

Chouteau, Manchester, Boyle and Swan Streets are all in close proximity being in Ward 23.

On the 1911 Gould's St. Louis, Missouri General & Business Directory appear among others:

By the 1920 census they appeared as follow:

This family enumerated 116/441/12/89 #4217 Swan Avenue (ancestry image 574). Living next door at #4200 Manchester (a line is drawn between the two households with Manchester written on one side of the line and Swan on the other) was Jacob Pyeatt and family. Again, William has aged less than 10 years and Catherine has only aged four years. I found William and Catherine's daughter, Hazel, as follows at #3965 McRae Avenue:

    This family was enumerated #87/153 #3965 McRae Street in District 270 (Ancestry.com image 12/52) 6 Jan 1920.

William died shortly after the census enumeration. His death certificate information is as follows:

Catherine's signature looked like it might have had a small 'e' mashed up against the 'a'. However, all other records I have found for this family use the Pyatt spelling. This death certificate claims that Julia Hornsby Pyatt was William's mother. She is found on many records (including her death certificate) as 'Pyeatt'. Also, some of William's siblings, including Elisha Pyeatt with who Julia lived in 1910, have the name as 'Pyeatt' on their records, headstones, etc.

I find Catherine on the 1930 census living with Hazel's family as a widow as follows:

  • Schatzman, Leo P age 43 born MO / wm / widowed / married at age 26 / Commercial Trader / Safety Razor Co / father born Alsace Loraine/Mother born MO
  • Schatzman, Helen (daughter) age 15 born MO / wf / single / father/mother born MO
  • Schatzman, Catherine (daughter) age 13 born MO / wf / single / father/mother born MO
  • Schatzman, Genevieve (daughter) age 11 born MO / wf / single / father/mother born MO
  • Pyatt, Catherine (mother-in-law) age 70 born MO / wf / widowed / married at age 19 / father/mother born S IRE

This family enumerated #3710 Oxford Avenue Dist 8 pg 151A 8 Apr 1930 in Central Township, Maplewood, Missouri.

I did not find Catherine on the state-wide death index between 1930 and 1940 (the last year I searched). Did she perhaps move out of state, or, did she live past the age of 80?
