Joseph P and Eliza Carper Hardy Pyatt

Joseph Paxton Piatt was born in 1824 in Columbiana, Ohio (he says Pennsylvania). He is said to be the son of David Piatt and Hannah Jackson Bonsell, however, no proof is given.

Family lore has Joseph born in Pottstown, Pennsylvania (Schuykill County?) and moved to South Bend, Indiana, sometime after his birth in 1824.

Joseph married (probably in South Bend, Indiana) Eliza Carper Hardy of Botetourt/West Chester County, Virginia, and they eventually moved to Healdsburg, California, where Joseph died in 1904. I believe Joseph was married second to Martha ? who died in June of 1898 in Healdsburg, California a month after giving birth to a daughter.

I find a marriage in St Joseph County, Indiana, between Joseph Piatt and Eliza C Phardy 03-22-1849. This date would match perfectly the timing of their firstborn in 1850.

The child of Joseph and Martha:

Joseph and family appear in the St. Joseph County, Indiana, censuses of 1850 and 1860 although I do not have abstracts. Joseph was a carriage maker.

Joseph and family appeared on the 1880 census of El Paso Township, Woodford County, Illinois, as follows:

This abstract was from familysearch.org; page 496C. Living nearby was his son, Charles and family:

Elizabeth Branstead has quite a bit of information on Charles Edwin Piatt and the descending line. There is someone else who has Piatt's in the Sonoma and Mendocino, California area. Perhaps they have some direct connections. All of Liz's family, on both sides, moved to Healdsburg, California about 1880-1885 though they first came to California in the 1850s.

According to John Keilch, Joseph most likely had brothers: William Piatt, a cabinet maker and Josiah Jacob Piatt (b1828 PA), a cabinet maker.

Is Joseph Paxton Piatt the same J P Piatt whose young wife died in Healdsburg, California, in May of 1898 as follows:
Death of Mrs. Piatt
Mrs. Martha Piatt, the young wife of J.P.Piatt, died on Thursday last at the age of twenty-six years. She was married to Mr. Piatt, who is seventy-two years of age, about eleven months ago. Mrs. Piatt left a baby four weeks old, which has been taken by Mrs. Walter McLean of Santa Rosa, Mr. Piatt's daughter. (Healdsburg Tribune 30 June 1898)

If he was about "seventy-two years of age, about eleven months ago" he would have been born July 1826. This Joseph Paxton Piatt had a daughter named Bertha who married Walter McLean. No marriage dates, etc. are given. And, since the marriage of Bertha F Piatt and Walter McLean took place in Canada, I most likely will not find record of it. If this is the same J.P. Piatt then he has an additional child, Martha 'Mattie' Piatt born May of 1898 Healdsburg, California.
