John S and Amanda J Beach Pyatt

John S(amuel?) Pyatt was born in 1822 in Burke County, North Carolina, to William and Cynthia A Fox Pyatt and died in 1919 in Wright County, Missouri. He married c1840 (probably in Knox County, Tennessee) Amanda J "Mandy" Beach who was born March 27, 1826 in North Carolina to Benjamin and Margaret Harper Beach and who died in Hazelwood Township, Webster County, Missouri, November 21, 1910. John (along with his brothers William and Joseph) was a Union Veteran of the Civil War (enrolled militia). Both he and Mandy are buried in the Mount Zion Cemetery, Wright County, Missouri.

John and Amanda had the following known children:

John and Amanda are usually only credited with one child, Joseph J Pyatt. However, due to their 1860 census entry and Amanda's 1910 census claim of 3 chidren born and living - I have included Martha and Mary as their offspring.

John moved to Knox County, Tennessee, along with many of his Pyatt relatives between 1838 and 1840. Although, I cannot find him listed in his own household. I believe he was probably not married until after the 1840 census as he and Mandy had been married 70 years in 1910.

By 1850 they had removed back to North Carolina, this time to Cherokee County, North Carolina, near Murphy/Peachtree - according to some family researchers. Here again, I cannot find them on the 1850 census. I have searched using all varieties of names and birthyear for the parents as well as Mary and Martha.

Then, about 1857/58 John and his brothers, Joseph Alfred Pyatt and William Calton Pyatt (along with a (?cousin) William Pyatt who was married to Matilda Loving) and their families started west. Some say they started for Kansas. Anyway, they stopped in Wright County, Missouri, and many descendants are still there today.

The family appeared as follows on the 1860 census of Wright County, Missouri (Boon Twp):

They are indexed as pg 901. Who were Martha J and Mary E Pyatt? They are not thought to be children of John and Amanda. Were they neices? William and Matilda Loving Pyatt had a Martha A who was aged 17 and born NC, but, she was enumerated with them. They also had a Mary, but, she was four years older than Martha and also born in North Carolina. I have seen people enumerated in different households, but, with their middle initials and place of birth not a 'match' I have to doubt they are one and the same. When I check all known Pyatts from the 1850 census, I find none that match these girls. Were they adopted by John and Amanda and were previously known by a different surname? If the couple in Webster County, Missouri in 1910 is John and Amanda, they claim to have three children. According to this entry, John was born c1821 and Amanda c1822.

By the 1870 census of Hartville, Wright County, Missouri, the family appeared as follows:

This family was enumerated #858/858 on image 91 and 92 of 131. The spelling was Peatt on pg 91 and Piatt on pg 92. Living a few pages away was John's brother, Joseph Alfred Pyatt, and family and the family of his brother, William Calton Pyatt. This entry gives a birthyear of 1820 for John and 1827 for Amanda. John's is pretty close to the 1860 answer, but, Amanda has shaved off about five years. Attempts to locate Martha and Mary turned up no promising matches.

Shortly thereafter, it appears that John made the following land purchases in Wright County, Missouri:

I find John and family on the 1880 census of Wright County, Missouri, as follows:

This family was enumerated #349/349 Dist 142 Boon Township pg 546 17 Jun 1880 (Ancestry.com image 39/46). His brothers Joseph and William are still living nearby. This entry fixes John's birthyear at 1823 and Amanda's at 1832. John's is still pretty close to other census years with Amanda's having shaved off 10 years from the 1860 census answer.

I could not locate John and Amanda on the 1900 census - I do find their son living in Pleasant Valley Township, Wright County, Missouri, as follows:

This family was enumerated 114/152/6/18.

Evidently, John and Amanda had moved to Hazelwood Township, Webster County, Missouri, on the 1910 census:

This family was enumerated #200/201 sheet 11B 5 May 1910 (Ancestry.com image 22/27). Living in Webster County in Finley Township was William J Pyatt, John S Pyatt's nephew. Differences include the fact that the wife is called 'Mary A' did someone misunderstand 'Amanda' or 'Manda'? The age of John S Pyatt is consistent with other census entries for the son of William and Cynthia A Fox Pyatt. However, 'Marys' age is now only close to the age of 'Amanda' from the 1860 census. This isn't a second wife as they claim to have been married for 70 years. They also claim to have three children which is consistent with the 1860 census. But, wow, the spacing of the children is bizarre. I couldn't find this John and Mary on the 1900 census anywhere. Various searches of the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census reveals only one John Pyatt of this age (the son of William and Cynthia A Fox Pyatt). So, if this entry is them - where were they in 1900 and where are the two daughters from 1860?

According to a listing of Union Soldier of Wright County, Missouri, John and his brothers served in the enrolled Missouri militia, were born in Missouri and are buried in the Mt Zion Cemetery. The Mount Zion Cemetery (you would think) is in Wright County, Missouri. However, when Mandy died in Webster County, Missouri, it lists her interment in the Mount Zion Cemetery. So, did they list that cemetery without specifying that it was in another county or are there more than one Mt Zion Cemetery?

Amanda's death certificate is as follows:
