Joseph and Penelope E Thompson McDowell

Joseph McDowell was born c1840 in Tennessee the second son of William and Jane Collins Robinson McDowell (older brother George W was born in 1838 - see "George W and Lucy Johnson McDowell" page). Sometime before 1846 the family moved to Marshall County, Alabama where siblings Hannah, Letta and Ganium were born between 1846 and 1852. In the mid 1850's the family moved to Wayne County, Missouri where William is thought to have died. Joseph's widowed mother then moved to Ripley County and married widower James Elgin McKinney.

Joseph married Penelope Elizabeth Thompson before 1860 though it is not known to us where or on what date they married. They probably married in Wayne County, MO, where the marriage records are missing before 1896. Joseph and his wife lived with his mother and her new husband and family during the 1860 Ripley County, MO, census. Penelope was born 10?/16? Dec 1841 in Benton County, Tennessee and died in Corning (Clay Co), Arkansas in 1920. It is possible that she had remarried to a Turner after Joseph's death, which is not known to us.

Joseph and Penelope had the following known children:

*He was living with the family of Isaac Webb in Carter County, MO, (five houses away from Joseph's brother, George) at the time of his death.
