Chapter 3: What To Do
Jiggy stared down at the ground. "Where does he get off using a
Kabutops
anyway?" he thought angrily. "This wouldn't have happened if the old
gym
leader hadn't left."
He felt a tug on his shirt and turned to look at Jiggly. "Since I'm me, I could beat that guy for you," she said. "But I still don't completely trust you. Look at what happened to Jigglypuff! Why didn't you call her back before the Kabutops even had a chance to attack?
"I..." Jiggy couldn't think of a good response to that. "I was too scared for her to think straight."
"You're the trainer, Jiggy! If your Pokémon are paralyzed with fear, you're supposed to be able to call them back, not stand there like a moron!" She paused. "Look... I'm going to go stand with Jigglypuff. I'll see you later."
Jiggy stared down at the ground again. "Well, if Jiggly won't help me, my Pokédex will. At least it won't judge me." He flipped open the Pokédex.
"A good trainer knows when to call back his or her Pokémon," it said. "A trainer should never freeze in the middle of battle, lest her or his Pokémon get injured. If he or she freezes, then it is a sign that she or he is a bad trainer and may never make it to the Pokémon League."
"I never liked you," said Jiggy, glaring at the Pokédex. He was about to smash it on the ground when he realized that he could find out info on Kabutops. He quickly told the Pokédex he wanted to know everything about Kabutops.
"Okay," said Jiggy, putting away the Pokédex. "Kabutops' strength lies in their rock-like armor and their scythe-like arms. They can also Absorb energy from their opponents or blow them away with Hydro Pump, but this is nowhere near as powerful as their Slash attacks. A Kabutops is a Rock and Water Pokémon... What Pokémon would work really well against it? Water or Ice would be great for the Rock part, but the Water would cancel it out. Electric would be great against the Water part, but the Rock would take away half of the Electric advantage. A Fighting or Ground Pokémon would be fine against the Rock part of the Kabutops and the Water wouldn't take anything away. But a GRASS Pokémon... A Grass Pokémon is a Kabutops' worst nightmare!" He stood up, a new purpose in mind. "Okay. There have got to be Grass Pokémon to catch somewhere around here." He took out his Pokédex again and checked.
"WHAT?!" he yelled. "No Grass Pokémon anywhere near Pewter City! Now what do I do? I can't ask Jigglypuff or Clefairy to help me, and Jiggly wouldn't even want to. I guess I've lost already..."
And just then, for some reason, a Vaporeon stepped in front of him.
"Vaporeon," he said simply.
"A Vaporeon?" asked Jiggy. "What are you doing here? Are you lost?" The Vaporeon looked at the ground. "Vapor vaporeon por vap vaporeon," he said sadly. He looked up at Jiggy. "Poreon?" he asked.
"I don't know what you're saying," said Jiggy. "I wish I did."
"Vaporeon," he said happily, laying down at Jiggy's feet.
"He wants to know if he can go with you. He ran away from a bad trainer," said Jiggly, who had come up from behind.
Suddenly Jiggy smiled. "I might not need a Grass Pokémon after all. Welcome to the team, Vaporeon!" He hugged the Vaporeon suddenly. Vaporeon was surprised at first, but soon found that he liked being hugged.
The door burst open. The man turned to look at the challenger. It was the boy with the Jigglypuff again. What was he doing here?
"I challenge you to a rematch!" said Jiggy. "This time, I'm not going to lose!"
The gym leader paused, then offered a deal. "Since you defeated two of my Pokémon before, you only have to fight my Kabutops this time. Does that sound fair?"
Jiggy waved his hand in a passing gesture. "Not a chance. I want to do this the right way."
The man smiled. "A true Pokémon trainer," he thought. "If only his skill were as strong as his heart."
"Vaporeon, Water Gun!" shouted Jiggy. Vaporeon nodded and blew a jet of water at Geodude. Geodude fell to the ground, unconscious.
"Very good," said the gym leader. "You found a Water Pokémon... Onix, go! Use your Rock Throw!" Onix placed his head near some rocks and knocked them toward Vaporeon.
Vaporeon jumped out of the way, much more agile than Onix. "Vaporeon, use your Sand-Attack and follow up with Water Gun!" said Jiggy, confident.
Vaporeon nodded and blinded Onix, whose head was conveniently still on the ground, with Sand-Attack. Then he blasted Onix with Water Gun and Jiggy had defeated two Pokémon with one.
The gym leader nodded slowly. "Very good indeed. But let's see if you can handle Kabutops this time!" He called out Kabutops.
"Okay. Vapore-" Jiggy was cut off as Jigglypuff jumped in front of Vaporeon and pushed him aside. "Jigglypuff! What are you doing?"
"Jigglypuff!" said Jigglypuff angrily. Jiggly, next to Jiggy, sighed. "She wants revenge on Kabutops. I don't know why, but that's the way it is... I hope she doesn't get hurt again."
Jiggy noticed that Jiggly wasn't really talking to him so much as she was talking to herself.
"I told her what to do," continued Jiggly, reassuring herself that her friend would be okay. "Solarbeam should get her through this..."
"I can't let you do this!" shouted Jiggy. "You're still injured! I hate to do this to you, but... Jigglypuff, return!" He took off the Pokéball that he rarely used and drew Jigglypuff back into it.
"What are you doing?!" demanded the furious Jiggly. "This is personal! You have to let her fight!"
"I won't let her fight when she's not at her best. She's NOT getting hurt again! Clefairy, go!"
"Clefairy!" said Clefairy. She was scared of Kabutops and didn't want to fight. Neither did Vaporeon, now that he had seen what he was up against. Jiggy shook his head. "I guess I've got no choice..." He let Jigglypuff out.
"Okay, Jigglypuff!" shouted Jiggly, as if she was a Pokémon trainer. "Solarbeam on Kabutops and it'll all be over!"
Jigglypuff took in sunlight for the Solarbeam as Kabutops rushed
forward for
a Slash...
Solarbeam was ready first! Jigglypuff fired at Kabutops...
Kabutops dodged! "It's all over..." said Jiggy.
Jiggly jumped out in front, pushing the other Jigglypuff aside. "You can't handle this, believe me," she said. She blasted Kabutops with an incredibly powerful Solarbeam, strong enough to destroy half of the wall of the gym.
"What?" said the gym leader, unbelieving. "That is some Jigglypuff..."
Jiggy walked out of Pewter City with his first badge and a new friend.
"Jiggly, I thought you didn't want to help me."
"I wasn't helping you. I was helping Jigglypuff," said Jiggly, stubborn as ever.
Jiggy sighed. "You're going to have to get to like me sooner or later if you're going to continue traveling with me."
"Hey, remember, I do anything I want to." Jiggly smiled.
Jiggy, Jiggly, Clefairy, Vaporeon, and Jigglypuff walked out of Pewter City. Each had high hopes for the future, although each hope was far different from each other.
