A BRIEF FAMILY HISTORY

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE OLIVE FAMILY
The following information includes research articles from the "Old James Olive Family" which was published in 1965 by the Olive family through the efforts of Mrs. Olive Cartwright.

Old James Olive's first son, James Olive, Jr., was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. According to the 1790 census, he and Elizabeth BURT OLIVE had five sons and two daughters. Information about his descendants comes from his son John Olive who was born 30 November 1770 at Raleigh and died 13 December 1836 in Columbia County Georgia. In 1802 he married Sarah Magruder in Columbia County. Their tombstones read "In memory of Sarah Magruder, wife of John Olive, and daughter of Ninian O. and Mary Magruder, who died on the 19th of Nov. 1833 in the 55th year of her age." and "In memory of John Olive, native of Raleigh, N.C., who died in Columbia County, Georgia, Dec. 13,1836, in the 67th year of his age."

William Olive is listed as the second son of Old James Olive. There have been questions as to which of the Hendon women he married since in his will and legal papers no name is given. They had 5 sons and 5 daughters; William Jr., Howell, James , Isham, Merrell, Sally, Kiddy, Sidia, Lydia, and Elizabeth. Descendants of William can be found mainly in North Carolina, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Georgia, Texas, and Arkansas.

In order to introduce myself and the Olive family, this is my branch of the Olive Tree:

This is a general outline of my Olive family. There are now two more generations of Olives who remain in Arkansas.

One of the more colorful Olive relatives was the cowboy Isom Prentice Olive. Print Olive, as he was known, was a legend in the cattle drive days. The Dawson County Historical Society in Nebraska was given the rights to the book written by Harry E. Chrisman about Print's life, THE LADDER OF RIVERS. They also have a museum which features Print Olive.

The third son is Southwood Olive who was born around 1755 in North Carolina. Southwood and Nancy Hendon Olive had nine children; Abel, Matthew, Keziah, Mary, Asa, Isham, Eli, Cynthia, and James. Although any descendants have not been located, many remained in the Wake County area of North Carolina.

The fourth son is John Olive, Sr. who was married to a Miss Partridge, who died after the birth of their children Burrell and Rachel Olive. He then married Nancy Womble and had 11 more children; John Jr., Michael, Sally, Berry, Franky or Frances, Daniel, Green, Nancy, Bennett, William Brinkley, and Gray. Some descendants are shown to be in Alabama, Oklahoma, and North Carolina.

Anthony Olive, the fifth son, married Karenhappuch Hendon. They moved to the frontier state of Georgia afer the American Revolution. There are many documents concerning their move to Georgia. They had 8 children; Mary Polly, Hendon, John, James, Keziah, Elizabeth or Betsy, Sarah or Sally, and Nancy. Descendants are mainly in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

The sixth son is Jesse Olive who married Monicah Massey who was also from Wake County, North Carolina. There are several reseachers with the Massey family line. Her grave in Paris, Tennessee was one of the tours at the 4th national reunion. There nine child were; Richard Calvin, Sally, John, Jesse, James, Rachel, Gilley, Mary or Polley, and Elizabeth. Descendants can be found in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Texas, and North Carolina.

Abel Olive, Sr.is the seventh son. He was born in Johnston County, North Carolina in 1765 and died in Kentucky. He and Betty Ann Willis, his first wife, had 5 children; Nancy, twins Joel and Jose, William, and Ira. After the death of Betty Ann he married Martha (Patsey) Minter of North Carolina. Their children were; Abel, Uel, Jesse, Richard, Patsey, John, Mary Ann, Salley, and James. The descendants settled mainly in Kentucky and Illinois. The family newsletter is published by one of the Abel Olive descendants in Illinois.

This brief family outline will be more accurate as family information is received.
