He built a dwelling house and barn. He cultivated 8 acres, planting 400 Apple trees and 75 Peach trees. The homestead was granted on 01 June 1875. The homestead contained 80 acres. It was located near the Smyrna Community near Huntsville, AR.
In the spring of 1877, the construction began on the Smyrna School House. Graves was the main boss. He measured and sawed every log to minute perfection and when the building was put up not a sound of hammering was heard. Every log fitted neatly into place. The building was complete in about 3 months. The building had split log seats, and was used for Wed. church meetings, school, community gatherings, etc.. The building is still in use today, in 1999.
Graves was listed in the 1880 Federal Census of War Eagle Township as a Woolcarder. He owned and operated a Wool Carding machine. This machine was run by a large treadwheel. It was about 20 feet wide, with one end about 6 feet higher than the other with wood cogs all around the underside of the wheel. These cogs fitted into a small pinion on the main shaft. A horse stood on one side of the wheel and it's weight ran the wool carding machinery. The horse "stood still", but had to walk all the time.
The machine was located about 200 yards north of the school house. The neighborhood kids and grownups would gather at Uncle Bolens and Aunt Sallys (Sarah) and partake of big red apples and pans of popcorn. After eating everyone would sing and Aunt Sally and Uncle Bolen would get their four note song books and show them how to sing, (the four notes were me, fow, sole and la). Many good times were had at the Cannaday house.
There is a Cannaday Cemetery near the Cannaday homestead, but we are not sure where Graves Bolen and Sarah are buried.

the Christ Lighthouse Church. At the age of
79
was the victim of a beating. Louis
Womack the suspect of the beating was charged
with first degree assault. He was arrested
after he drove himself to Huntsville Memorial
Hospital for the treatment of 4 gunshot
wounds. According to the Feb 1991 newspaper
article, Frank had told Womack not to come
onto their property. Womack asked why he was
not allowed to come on his property and when
Frank was telling him why, Womack hit him
with his fist, then took a tire jack from his
truck and hit him and his son Bob. Bob
picked up a hoe handle and hit Womack. Joyce
saw the altercation from the house and got a
pistol, firing a warning shot. Bob ran to
the house to get the pistol, returned and saw
Womack gouging out his father's eye. He then
shot four times and when Womack came at him
he shot him again. Womack then drove away,
he had a wound to the arm, to the hand and 2

found of a land transaction between her
father and A.L., this is found in Book V,
page 383. Thomas Cook sold land for $300.00
to A.L. 12 July 1899, (NE 1/4 of the NW 1/4,
Sec. 4, Twp. 17W, R26W, 65 acres). They
lived on the family farm. A.L. persuaded
Thomas to sign the deed for the place over to
him. Julie's brothers heard they forced A.L.
to sign the deed back over to Thomas, which
was done 3 months later on 20 Oct., 1899 for
$300.00 (Book X, page 355). A.L. left her,
and she filed for divorce. In 1920 census,
Julie was listed as a widow, living with John
Rufus McLoud with her daughter Fannie and her
son Fred. While in
Sapulpa, OK she m. TONY
ESTES, he left her when Fannie was born,
they divorced in 1912, she then returned home
to live with her parents. Julie during this
time had a child by DAVID D. MARHSALL,
she m. 6 June 1924 JAMES "JIM" HARP,
d. 1941, in OK. They moved to the Rockhouse
Community in Madison CO, then in 1930 to
Mannford, OK. Jim was known as a mean,
cruel, and violent man. After his death
Julie moved to CA to live with her son, Fred.

another man, and when he left her he took

Army during WWI, came home to Fourm, AR where
he lived his entire life. He was a
member of the Fourm Church of Christ where he
was baptized 9 Oct., 1927 by William
Weatherage. A member of the Alabam
Independent Order of Oddfellows Lodge #558 as
early as 1925. Dutch never married. He is
buried at the Marshall Cemetery in Forum,
AR, where he donated some of his land for the
cemetery. He lived close by the cemetery
for many years. He always wanted to be
buried in the far corner of the cemetery
where
there was a sapling growing that tree still
stands, 5 Nov., 1998.

the Army in WWII. He was wounded in Okinawa and received the Purple Heart. He bought a farm on Kings River in Berryville, Carroll CO, AR when he returned home from the war. He has lived there since.
Paul was a carpenter
and a master plumber. He owned his own
plumbing company "McLoud Plumbing" for many
years in Berryville.
12 April 1945, the worst disaster to hit in Madison County History. A tornado occured the day President Franklin Roosevelt died. The tornado crossed the county from Crosses to Marble AR on a Thurs. evening. 10 people were killed. Buildings, business property, schools, churches, farm land and homes were destroyed. Farm animals were killed and many people were injured. The tornado came from Reed's Creek over Big Sandy Mountain and down Big Onion Branch, before reaching King's River and Marble. The tornado turned NE up a hollow and on towards Dry Fork and Metalton. A small building occupied by Elsie was partially destroyed, but she was away from home at the time the tornado struck.

Jan., 1946 Dellman Smith born 26 Sept. 1922, Marble, Arkansas. Died 30 Nov. 2001, at the age of 79 in Springdale, Arkansas from cancer. He is buried at the Fairview Cemetery in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Virginia grew up in the Alabam Community and went to school at Alabam, AR with her brothers Burl, Paul and sister rosalie during the WW II years. She moved to tulsa, Ok and worked at McDonald-Douglas Aircraft as a riveter. After she married and moved to Fayetteville, AR she worked at the Bates Elementary School in the lunch room. She later became manager at Fayetteville High School where she was until her untimely death of breast cancer.
Dellman was a Navy veteran of WWII, serving as a machinist’s mate first class, and was a survivor of Pearl Harbor. Member of the Arkansas Trappers Association, and a 39 year member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He worked for Royal Typewriter Co, the US Postal Service and He retired in 1987 as a construction superintendent of James Constuction Company.

Rosalie went to the Alabam school then to Huntsville State Vocational School. Her freshman year she had to stay in town with Donna and Hill Everett (her school teacher), because there were no buses. She baby-sat and cleaned house for them to pay for her board. The next year she was able to stay home, the bus stop was about 2 miles away, so she walked to the bus stop every morning and evening. In 1945 after graduating, she took a teachers course and got her teaching certificate and taught school in 1944-1945 at the Crossroads school. She worked for many years in a garment factory in Bentonville, AR. When it closed she worked for Walmart, where she retired. At the age of 70, she was still working at an Elementary school in the lunchroom.

School of Nursing. For many years she was a
volunteer for the American Heart Association,
The Amerian Red Cross, and a Girl Scout
Leader. Joyce retired from the Infirmary at
the University of Arkansas.
