I was born in Mitcham,
(Melbourne) and baptised at St Paul's
Lutheran Church, Box Hill,
(Melbourne). (My maiden surname is THIELE.)
I am the eldest in my family and have one married brother, and a sister. My
parents were committed to moulding us in a loving and caring way, introducing
us to the Christian life, involvement in the local community, and it's from
them that I have gained an appreciation for the Arts, Education and Theology.
I
spent my childhood on the Mornington Peninsula (south of Melbourne), after moving
from Doncaster (Melbourne) at the age of three. As a family, we attended the
small St Peter's Lutheran church in Frankston, Victoria, and later attended
Lutheran services at Rosebud (now Bethany Lutheran congregation, held at Padua
College school chapel). In 1980, I confirmed my baptismal vows at St Peter's
Lutheran Church, Frankston.

Mum, (Reta)
who is Canadian (born in Amiens, Saskatewan and later raised in Niagara Falls, Ontario),
is a retired nurse who also worked as a missionary in Papua New Guinea (1957-62), before holidaying in Australia and meeting Dad (Phil), who
is an Australian
and was an apple orchardist at the time and for many years to follow. Dad is
now doing some farm contract
work with my brother, as well as working with sheep on the family property.
In his early twenties (as a 'mature-age' student), he undertook just over a
year of seminary studies (Luther Seminary),
when Dad was contemplating becoming a pastor. For many years Mum worked at
a
local medical centre as a nurse. Both Mum and Dad are
currently involved in selling produce (jams, jellies, chutneys, lemon butter...)
at local markets.
My sister was working as a receptionist at a medical centre in Frankston, but has just completed a nursing degree and has been offered a nursing job for next year in Frankston.
My brother, sister (Jonathan & Pauline) and I attended Red Hill Consolidated
School
(state primary school) and Padua College (Catholic secondary school). There
weren't many
Lutherans in our area, and little did my Catholic friends or we know at the
time, that it's the biggest Protestant church in the world.

The beauty of going to a Catholic school, however, was that I learnt to
appreciate Christians from other denominations. I couldn't afford to be
'insular' in this regard, having also had an Australian Grandmother who was
Anglican,
and an American Grandmother who occasionally attended the AOG church. My
Australian Grandfather was Lutheran and my Canadian Grandfather didn't discuss
his spiritual beliefs openly, but was originally a member of the AOG church.
My mother is Canadian, so I've also got leanings towards that country, and
actually lived there for nine months when I was young and impressionable.
Legally I am unable to take out Canadian citizenship, but genetically I am as
much an Australian as a Canadian!
Frank's 2nd eldest brother and sister-in-law had a baby boy in May 2001 and a baby girl in December 2003.
In November, 2000 we became an aunty and uncle again. This is my brother and sister-in-law's second child and daughter. In February 1999 they became parents to their first child. Frank's eldest brother and his wife also have two girls, born in October 1993 & October 1996. We thank God for these little miracles of life,
who have brought much joy into our extended family.
Now we are finally due to have our own baby in July 2004, and we face this major moment in our lives amidst a mixture of excitement and trepidation!
I'm a qualified primary school teacher, and parish worker, and I've undertaken
some short courses in computing since 1995 and sat for my 7th Grade piano exam
in 1996.
I have worked both as a volunteer and paid staff member in all of these
capacities, since February, 1994, in some form or other (TRT, SSO, HPI, RI, LAP/LID) at the
local
Cambrai Area School
On 25 June 1998 I undertook a "Basic Casualty Care For School" course through
St. John Ambulance Australia, and on 9 September 1996 I completed a "One Day Mandated Notifier Training Program",
through (what was then) Family and Community Services, in Adelaide.
I have been involved in our local Lutheran church activities and community
activities,
eg. "Cambrai Agricultural Museum Inc.", Black Hill branch of
"Australian Red Cross", "Country Fire Authority"(CFS), "Cambrai Hotel Social Club". We
also joined the "Australia-Canada Association" in 1998. I've also attended some of the craft days for the
wives of pastors in the Barossa area, as well as meeting with a few of the
members of the Barossa Chamber Group to 'oil' my skills on the oboe. In 1999 I joined Weight Watchers, and it's
changed our views somewhat on 'good' diet and eating properly, with just a slight
adjustment to our existing diet - and it's also helped me gain more control
over my weight. They also have some really tasty recipes which we've tried out.
On 6th January, 2000 I even became a "life member" after reaching
my "goal weight" six weeks earlier and completing a "maintenance course"!
Some of my hobbies/interests include music, reading, information technology,
folk art, ceramics and photography. These are purely for pleasure, although
I
also have an interest in books on human relations or counselling from a Christian
point of view. I hold a Diploma of Teaching (obtained while living in Ballarat),
a Bachelor of Education and Graduate Diploma of Theology in Education (obtained
while living in Adelaide). I completed the Lutheran teacher's accreditation
in 1989 (now an accredited grad dip since 1993) and the parish worker's course
in 1993, through LTC (Luther
Seminary - courses)
in Adelaide, and undertook all the counselling subjects available at the time.
I have also been developing my keyboard skills in the last few years (in relation to both computing and music), as mentioned above. I appreciate "classical" music, but usually listen to middle-of-the-road Christian and some secular "contemporary" music. I've also just joined the Inter-church community choir in Crow's Nest. During the couple years I've been looking for work in a library (either in a school or public library), and since moving to Crow's Nest I've also been exploring the possibility of tutoring primary school students in English, teaching piano and doing some word processing work.
In October 1999 I accepted an offer to undertake a "Master of Education (Teacher Librarianship)", from Charles Sturt University (NSW) via distance education. The course began February 2000, and I have completed one subject. However, I have decided not to pursue my studies in this field. After more time to reflect on the matter, I have now enrolled in a Master of Education (Special Education) course at University of Southern Queensland, via distance education. I am about to begin studies in Semester Two, 2002. A nearby school has also agreed to allow me to participate voluntarily in their Special Education Unit, which will help me obtain futher experience in the area.

Frank RASENBERGER
was born in Brisbane,
Queensland and baptised at St John's Lutheran Church in Corinda (Brisbane).
He
also grew up in Brisbane, the youngest son of German immigrant parents.
He
has two married brothers and two nieces. From his parents (Kurt & Gundula),
he
learnt a respect for others and different cultures. His father has been working as a
Photogrammatrist
for Qasco, but is now retired, and his mother was originally
a Cartographer, who has just retired from work as a Potter.
Both are involved in selling Neways products.
Frank and his brothers
attended Watson Road State School and then Sunnybank State High School. His
eldest
brother also sells computers for Instant IT.
His second eldest brother teaches at
Warrigal Road State School.
He was raised traditionally as a Lutheran, and enthusiastically confirmed his
faith in 1981, under Pastor Eric Simpfendorfer, after taking the
opportunity to ask his pastor some challenging questions about the Christian
faith.
But after he left high school he fell away from the Church.
Frank and his family attended the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Moorooka
(Brisbane),
Queensland,
until its closure and then Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Coopers Plains (Brisbane).
After much searching and studying of different religions, he came back to Christ
and actively joined his local Lutheran Church and youth group for about a year.
He then became in involved in an interdenominational, international group
called
"Youth With A Mission", after some encouragement from Jan Wright (originally
a member of the same church he attended), a friend & motherly mentor. He
attended
a "Discipleship Training School" at Goulburn in NSW and then joined the staff
in Melbourne in it's early days. He also became involved In Overseas Christian
Fellowship, during his ensuing student years in Adelaide, which he found
beneficial.
He eventually felt the need to learn more about his 'roots' and went on to
study at Luther Seminary, Adelaide.
As he progressed through the course he became more open to the possibility of
being a pastor. He highly valued his vicarage year in Ringwood (Melbourne)
under Pastor Kevin Schmidt, during 1992, which was also our first year of
marriage. He holds a Bachelor of Theology and Graduate Diploma in Ministry.
The pastor who confirmed him, also participated in his ordination service
on 30th January, 1994, at New Life Lutheran Church, West Logan (Brisbane), where
his
parents were involved at the time. Eric was a great encourager and inspiration
to Frank.
Pastor Eric Simpfendorfer died of Motor Neurone Disease on 8th May, 1997.
He is presently a Lutheran pastor, and begun ministry in the Crow's Nest Lutheran
Parish, after he was installed 7th July, 2000. This parish is currently made up of two congregations
- Crow's Nest and Haden, which are located in the "Darling Downs" in Queensland. The Crow's
Nest Advertiser featured an article on the installation
11th July. A couple weeks before this the town of Crow's Nest had a re-enactment of their worm
races, which are held annually in mid-October, in which we participated, with great mirth! Previous
to this, Frank was pastor to Cambrai Lutheran Parish (made up of Cambrai, Black Hill, Sedan & Stonefield) in the "Mid-Murraylands"
in South Australia (1994 to 2000). He has been involved in the community, playing tennis for Cambrai, and was on the Cambrai Area School Council.
*In 1997 Frank completed training as a volunteer radio presenter for
the new community radio station - Triple
Bfm 89.1
"The Station at the Station" - in Tanunda, in the Barossa Valley . He was presenting a mix of Christian and secular "easy-listening", "rock" and "alternative" music , called "Message in Music". His was on 8-10 p.m. on Sundays. The Christian music suppliers who were assisting him by making CD's available, are
"The Open Book",
"Word
Bookstore", "Koorong",
"CMP" (listed above)
and "Christian Marketing Company
Australasia".

Frank also appreciates "classical" music, but has a particular interest
in "Hard Music", especially of the Christian variety and delights in
participating in the occasional Christian bookshop "crawl". He enjoys
reading in general and is a "connoisseur" of fine teas and coffees.
Squash and tennis are also on his agenda - particularly Squash.
Frank and I met each other in Adelaide South
Australia,
where we were both studying in 1989 and later became engaged in May 1991, and
were married in 1991, at St Peter's Lutheran Church, Frankston. We have
grown through the ups and downs of married life and appreciate the part God
shares in our love and commitment to one another. In May 1998 we
attended a "Anglican Marriage Encounter" weekend in Ballarat, and in July 1998
we attended a Lutheran "Marriage Merger" retreat. Both of these times away
gave
us the opportunity to re-focus our attention on our relationship, within a
Christian context and without the distractions of every-day life.
International Lutheran Marriage Encounter
We both played in the Cambrai parish band. I was playing the keyboard, and occasionally
the mandolin and oboe (very basically). Frank played the guitar. He also plays the recorder (soprano and tenor).
At present we have a pet dog and cat, (Anne
& Frank's Picture Page). We like going to movies,
cafes/restaurants, showing relatives and friends the tourist sites in
our area and visiting our relatives & friends.
In 1993 we flew over to Germany to see Frank's relatives, and in 1995 we
journeyed
to Canada to see mine. As my family lives interstate
- Victoria - we don't get to see them very often, but we try to stay in touch via the phone & Australia Post. We also send Frank's
brother, Bernie, an occasional Email at his work. Both my parents and my sister now have email, so please contact me if you'd like to email them.
We're now discovering that some of our overseas & inter-state relatives and
friends have access to Email (and fax machines), so the world is getting
'smaller' with technology!
