“THIS IS ONE HOT BOOK. YOU MUST SEE IT. It's a goldmine. A very moving study with detailed and convincing arguments. If you read just one book on the resurrection, this is the only one to read. It is well documented and very hard for even the most died-in-the-wool skeptic to refute.” R. Whiteside

In depth study, intelligently presented with scripture, July 10, 2010 By Cherie Sumner

Amazon Verified Purchase (What's this?)

This review is from: The Resurrection and Immortality (Paperback)

I have bought several copies of this book, to use for study and as gifts. It is the most complete book I have found that gives proofs revealing that the immortal soul theory is impossible. Instead, it points out the better message the gospel teaches.....of resurrection and immortality at Christ's return....a gift to receive at that time, not something inherent at birth that humanity already contains. It has very in depth explanations using many scriptures to lay out a clear conclusion. For any one who wants to understand God's real glorious plan for humanity, this book will open your eyes to the truth and make you question so many "traditional" beliefs that just aren't backed up by scripture. It really makes you think and sort things out for yourself, without a certain denomination's influence or religious beliefs, other than the bible's own words, laying out God's plan. It changed forever my foundational beliefs about Christianity, and also gave me a drawing respect to God like never before. I find its information irrefutable to ignore. I hope it will help others seek out for themselves the "real" story of what it means to be immortal. For now, God only has that gift, and it will be shared later through Jesus. Highly recommend!

Immortality or Resurrection?

robertwr.com/

This is a very long article about souls, spirit, hell, resurrection, and (mis)translations in the Bible, by William Robert West. This is a must read for Christians!

An e-mail sent to me

“Samuel Dawson and I corresponded about his essay on hell that he has online. When I read it I was stunned, and started studying the topic of hell for myself. I wrote him once and mentioned that I was beginning to see that the doctrine of the immortality of the soul and hell were linked and that I could not find the doctrine of an immortal soul in the Scriptures. A little while later, he wrote me and told me I needed to get a copy of your book. He sent me the table of contents and I was hooked. I immediately ordered a copy. I read it online until my copy arrived. What I read both excited me and surprised me. I was so surprised to learn that the Hebrew word, nephesh was used of animals in the first chapter of Genesis.

I also got angry about the way that is hidden by the translators!

I have tried to talk with people about all I have learned and I get nowhere. In fact, I have been told I shouldn't ever teach this to anyone. I have been in an email discussion with one lady recently. She agreed to discuss it because she says it is a dangerous doctrine and she hopes to show me where I am in error. The one thing she constantly tells me is that Christ did not 'go out of existence when he died, but went to Paradise. I have tried to explain that death is compared to being asleep and that we don't go out of existence because God is still aware of each one of us, but we do cease to live, death being the opposite of life. She replied that Christ could not have died because God cannot die. She has said that to believe that more than Christ's body died is to deny His Deity. I have read some of Barton Stone's writings and I know he also believed that only Christ's body could have died. I do see the dilemma here. God cannot die...Christ is God, thus only Christ's body could have died. I am having trouble understanding this, but I don't think this would prove man is born with an immortal soul that cannot die or prove torment in 'hell'. We are mortal. The Scriptures teach that we are seeking immortality. I hope you don't mind sharing your thoughts with me on this. I know you bring out in your book that Christ's death was real, that He was not just as alive in those 3 days as He was before death, but you did not touch upon the thought that  "God cannot die." Can you help me understand this better, please?

Thank you for writing your book. Thank you for your courage!! My oldest son is 15 and wants to be a preacher and does preach now when he is given an opportunity. He read some of Samuel Dawson's essay (I didn't know it at the time) and started studying on his own. He came to me and told me he doesn't believe eternal torment is taught in Scripture. He has also read your book. He is so convinced that when I start to question that we must be wrong because so few believe it, he just looks at me and shakes his head.  He spends a good amount of time studying his Bible.  He is a very serious young man.    He is young and ready to take on the world...he even told one of our deacons what he had learned and was told he better not preach it if he wanted to be accepted in the brotherhood. My son told him he had to preach the truth.  My son preaches about the second death.  He makes statements about only the righteous are promised eternal life and does not preach torment in hell.   He has not at this time tackled the subject head on in a sermon, but I am sure he will one day as he gets older and gains even more confidence.

I felt like you. When I let go of this terrible doctrine, I felt such a surge of love for God of the Bible that I can't describe it...I just kept praising His name and crying.

I am reading your book on the rapture online right now. It is also very good. I hope it will be available for purchase soon. I can't believe all the work you have put into placing both your books online!! Thank you!

Thank you again for all your studying, for sharing what you have learned and for your great courage. I thank God for you!

May God bless you and your work to His glory.”

Comments: Great work!! I had believed and preached the traditional view of 'hell' for 20 years. I am deeply sorry now as I see God will indeed destroy all the wicked on Judgment day, not torture them forever. (Matthew 10:28)

I wish every seminary student would read this book. It is an airtight case.

Thankfully, many evangelicals are coming to understand the scriptural truth of "Conditional Immortality." Only believers will become immortal. Hallelujah!

God bless you!

Comments: I cannot believe that there are Christians out there who know what the Bible teaches about Hell! This essay is a breath of fresh air. I commend you for weeding out the Roman Catholic ideologies that plague the modern Church and turn its followers into fearful, judge mental excuses for "Christians". Comments: Thanks. I accepted Christ a few months ago. What an awesome experience the first few weeks were! Then came visions of the majority of mankind being thrown alive into a pit of fire, where they would scream and whither for eternity. I saw faces of people I loved, people I knew- burning, withering, screaming in pain! I was in terrific fear, fighting back "God, why??"" So, I prayed, "Let me understand, Lord, for I do not want to question your righteous judgment!" But peace did not come. I was so shaken that I had to get therapy and prescription medication. I then noticed all the times the Bible used the word "perish," "destroy," "everlasting destruction," "death," and plus something in me telling me that a God who is love would never do this - Your website has brought me peace. I prayed for discernment, and I have it now.

Thanks.

Comments: I have been reading your material recently, and appreciate the depth of your study on the subject. I have many pages of notes from my study over the past few years, many of which coincide with yours. There is one thought that the Lord impressed upon me that I have not yet come across in your writings. The doctrine of eternal punishment in hell perverts the gospel message by invalidating the death of Jesus on the cross. If the wages of sin is death, then He perfectly paid the penalty for the sins of the world, but if burning for eternity in hell is the wages of sin, then He would have to pay that penalty by burning forever in our place. If a criminal is sentenced to a $500 fine, and someone agrees to pay his penalty, that person must pay the $500, and if the sentence is 10 years in prison, the person must spend 10 years in prison in the place of the criminal, and if the criminal is sentenced to death, the person must die in his place. God is a just God, and He would not require a sacrifice that is not equal to the punishment he has decreed for the sin of mankind. To say that Jesus died on the cross for our sins means that He DIED IN OUR PLACE, FOR OUR SINS. Death is what we deserve, and death is the price He paid for our redemption. I would appreciate your comments.

Comments: I am SOOOOO THANKFUL you put this up. I completely lost faith in Christianity a few years ago because of the illogic and unfairness that was being taught with "fire and brimstone" by everyone here in the Bible belt. I just couldn't believe in a God who could be so sadistic and unjust. Finally, I feel at ease. Thank you.

Comments: Am Still digesting what you have written and pondering on some vital issue of the Christian faith, especially this one, this has been the answer to my long question of eternal torture for sinner, which contradict two passages in the bible which says "man dies once and judgment" and in Revelation 20 I guest so which says "...The second death". I was thinking if the soul is really immortal, poor me just for simple theft I would be tortured forever in eternity? Thanks a lot for this web-page. I guest my mind would be now in focus to serve the living God whom I want to see in the future.

Comments: Robert your article lends much insight into this business about people going to heaven or hell. I have wondered for years how the body of Christ could ascribe to such a doctrine when the resurrection is so plainly spelled out in God's word. The idea of heaven and hell and that of the resurrection just don't jibe, yet most Christians as well as pastors believe and teach this as fact while I hardly ever hear pastors including the radio and TV evangelists talking about the resurrection. What a doctrine of demons for believers and a stark injustice to unbelievers. Anyway I love your explanation on the parable, Lazarus and the rich man, I'd been pondering on that one but knew in my spirit that it was not referring to an actual heaven or hell. Thanks so much as your commentary helped me to see that as well as some other things more clearly. GREAT JOB!!

For me, Jesus is loving and paid the price so that we can have eternal life. Now I do not believe in eternal Hell. I know some Christians believe that, but from what I have studied, evil men and women will only be punished in relationship to the evil that they have done and then they will be no more. You can go to http://www.robertwr.com/resurrection.pdf  and download this book that explains hell and the soul very well.

Great book. Should be required reading in seminary

Tom White LIKES this book

When I started reading this book I could not put it down. It takes some of the most controversial subjects of the Bible and makes them simple. Reading it will make one wonder why topics as soul or spirit, resurrection, immortality, and hell could even have become controversial. This is one of the best researched books on these topics in print. After reading it the Bible is clearer then it had ever before been.

AN IMMORTAL SOUL AND THE DOCTRINE OF HELL

A SOUL THAT IS IMMORTAL AND CANNOT DIE

OR THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD

TWO VERY DIFFERENT GOSPELS

UNCONDITIONAL IMMORTALITY AND THE RESURRECTION ARE TWO VERY DIFFERENT GOSPELS Galatians 1:6-9: There is a dividing line between unconditional immortality and conditional immortality so sharp that two are completely different Gospels as far apart as night and day. Both cannot be true. One is a "delusion" [2 Thessalonians 2:11] "A working of error" [American Standard Version]. Do you believe a lie? Unconditional immortality is very different from anything preached in Paul's day [Galatians 1:6]. It takes away a need for the death of Christ, and the need of the resurrection.

TWO INCOMPATIBLE BELIEFS

Either one makes the other one impossible. These two Gospels are so opposed to each other that if one is true, it makes the other one a lie of Satan that will destroy you at the judgment. Believing it is disbelieving God. Believing this doctrine, or not believing it, can be the difference in whether you believe God or man. One came from man and is vain worship [Matthew 15:9]. The resurrection and an undying immortal soul are not compatible. If one is true, then the other one cannot be. They are so contradictory to each other that you cannot believe both; you must choose one or the other for both cannot be true. Christ taught the resurrection. It is our only hope, not now having immortality and never dying. The undead cannot be raised.

The resurrection: Makes an immortal never dying soul impossible. If it is not dead, a soul that is alive cannot be raised from the dead.

Unconditional immortality: 1. Makes the resurrection an unanswerable problem. If the soul is immortal and never dies, what will be the use of the resurrection? What will be raised from the dead? 2. Makes a real resurrection impossible.

THE SILENCE OF THE BIBLE

All the great doctrines of the Bible are clearly expressed. The doctrine of God, of Christ, the resurrection, the church, the judgment, sin, etc., and are all as clear and plain as our language can say them, but the doctrine of an "immortal soul" or "a never-dying soul," which is constantly expressed today, cannot be found in the Bible. From where did it come? If anyone believes, practices, or teaches anything in the name of Christ, they are obligated to prove it from the Bible. If they do not or cannot, it is a sin to believe, practice, or teach it. It is up to the person who affirms anything to prove it, and it is not up to the person in the negative to prove something is not true. Have those who believe in and teach Hell proved it to be from God's word? Hell MUST be proved if it is taught. At the judgment, what will you say to God if there is no Hell and you have taught many that God was the cruel and sadistic God of Hell?

THE WAGES OF SIN

Is “the wages of sin death” (Romans 6:23) or is “the wages of sin eternal life with torment”?
