"She is ever watchful....
and her talons are "treacherous!!"

THE WHITE HOUSE, 13 January 1997 -- To correct a record of racial prejudice that lasted
more than fifty years, President William Jefferson Clinton
today awarded seven African-American veterans of
World War II our nation's highest military award,
the Medal of Honor. Five of the Medals were awarded posthumously.

The awardees are:
Charles L. Thomas 1st Lieutenant Detroit MI, died 1980
Edward A. Carter Jr Staff Sergeant Los Angeles CA, died 1963
George Watson Private Birmingham AL, Killed in Action
John R. Fox 1st Lieutenant Cincinnati OH, Killed in Action
Ruben Rivers Staff Sergeant Hotulka OK, Killed in Action
Vernon Baker, 77 2nd Lieutenant St. Maries IA
Willy F. James Jr Private First Class Kansas City MO, Killed in Action

Of the six WW2 soldiers, Lt. Baker, who served with the 370th Infantry
Regiment of the 92nd Infantry Division, was a lone veteran
to accept the Honor. The other six men are deceased.
Their relatives attended the ceremony.

MEDAL OF HONOR

LT. BAKER

Lt. Baker said in a CNN interview after the ceremony,
"This day will vindicate those men and make things right."
President Clinton said, "They helped America to become more
worthy of them and more true to its ideals."

Lt. Baker received his award for heroism in April 1945.
During a fierce engagement against German forces Lt. Baker
destroyed four Nazi machine gun nests and killed nine enemy
soldiers using his gun and hand grenades.
Many of his comrades during the battle were killed after running out
of ammunition. The supplies and reinforcements they
desperately needed never arrived.
Attending the ceremony in the East Room of the White House were
William Perry, Secretary of Defense, Colin Powell,
former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and
current JCS Chairman John Shalikashvili.

A Description Of The Action

On April 5, 1945, an all-black platoon of 25 soldiers led by a
white Captain, John F. Runyon, was ordered to storm
a Nazi-held stronghold. As they started their attack
the Germans shelled the platoon with artillery fire
and strafed the Americans with machine-gun fire.

In the ensuing attack Captain Runyon left the engagement
with the platoon radio officer to obtain supplies and reinforcements.
Lieutenant Baker continued the assault, destroying three German
machine-gun nests, one bunker and one artillery observation
post. In the course of action he killed several German soldiers.

After a valiant effort to overcome the German stronghold
Lt. Baker was forced to withdraw with seven other survivors because
Captain Runyon had not returned with help.
During his necessary retreat Lt. Baker knocked out two more
Nazi machine-gun nests using his remaining grenades.

Decades later, a team of military historians examining the action
concluded that white racism and segregation were the
reasons why the seven men of Baker's platoon were not awarded the Medal of Honor.
The Army's Senior Officer Awards Board recommended
all seven men should receive the Medal of Honor.

A SALUTE TO CHARLES CHIBITTY AND ALL "NATIVE AMERICANS"
THAT SERVED THEIR COUNTRY

CHARLES CHIBITTY......COMANCHE CODE TALKER

Arthur L. Money, Assistant Secretary of Defense (Command, Control,
Communications and Intelligence) presents to Charles Chibitty the American flag
that flew over the capitol in his honor in August.
Chibitty, the last surviving Comanche Code Talker from
World War II, was honored in a Pentagon ceremony Nov. 30.
(by Staff Sgt. Robert Broils, U.S. Army
Visual Information Center.)

Charles was presented with the Knowlton Award
at the White House, in recognition of his significant
contributions to military intelligence efforts.

Along with 16 other Comanche Indians, Chibitty was part of the Army's 4th
Signal Company, also known as the Code Talkers.
Like the Choctaws of World War I, and the Navajos
in the Pacific Theater, the Comanche Code Talkers
used their native language to prevent the enemies of the
European Theater from intercepting messages of the allied troops
during World War II. The unit was instrumental during
the Normandy invasion.

Chibitty was born near Medicine Park, Okla. on Nov. 20, 1921.
After attending Haskell Indian School at Lawrence, Kan.
he enlisted in the U.S. Army in January 1941.
While in the Army, Cpl. Chibitty earned the World War
II Victory Medal, the European Theater of Operations
(5th Bronze Star Victory Medal,
the Europe African Middle East Campaign Medal,
and the Good Conduct Medal.
In addition to his role as a Code Talker,
Chibitty was a champion boxer in the Army.
The Knowlton Award was established in 1995 by the
Military Intelligence Corps Association.
The award recognizes individuals who have contributed
significantly to Army Intelligence, who have
high standards of integrity and moral character,
and who display outstanding degree of professional competence.
It is named for Lt. Col. Thomas Knowlton
who performed distinguished military service during
the American Revolutionary War.
He was appointed by George Washington to form a regiment
expressly for intelligence services.

Footnote: The Comanche contributed to the success of the
U.S. Army during WWII. Seventeen Comanches were assigned to the
Comanche Signal Corp of the Army and were trained in all
phases of communication and eventually were assigned to
the Army's Fourth Signal Division.
Comanches used their language to relay important messages
that could not be understood or decoded by the enemy
during WWII. Working in teams with regiments
in the field, the Comanches coded
messages back to division headquarters where another member of
the Signal Corps received and decoded the message.
Examples of Comanches code included the phrase
"posah-tai-vo" meaning crazy white man and was used to
identify Adolph Hitler, and since the Comanche had a
word for airplane but not for bomber the Code Talkers
came up with the Comanche phrase for pregnant airplane.
Once again the French were the first to recognize
the accomplishments of Native American's contributions
and on the same day they recognized the Choctaw, the
French government honored the Signal Corps by presenting
the Chevalier de L'Ordre National du Merite
to the Comanche tribal chief.
The Comanche , Choctaw and Navajo soldiers and marines
proved in WWI and WWII, that our greatest strength lies in our
ability to value the diversity of our great Nation.

The Best Day of My Life

Today, when I awoke, I suddenly realized that this is the best day of my life, ever!
There were times when I wondered if I would make it to today; but I did!
And because I did I'm going to celebrate!

Today, I'm going to celebrate what an unbelievable
life I have had so far:
The accomplishments, the many blessings,
and, yes, even the hardships
because they have served to make me stronger.
I will go through this day with my head held high, and a happy heart.
I will marvel at God's seemingly simple gifts:
The morning dew, the sun, the clouds, the trees,
the flowers, the birds. Today, none of these
miraculous creations will escape my notice.

Today, I will share my excitement for life with other people.
I'll make someone smile.
I'll go out of my way to perform an unexpected
act of kindness for someone I don't even know.

Today, I'll give a sincere compliment to someone who seems down.
I'll tell a child how special he is, and I'll tell
someone I love just how deeply I care for him/her
and how much he/she means to me.

Today is the day I quit worrying about what I don't
have and start being grateful for all the
wonderful things God has already given me.
I'll remember that to worry is just a waste of time
because my faith in God and his Divine Plan
ensures everything will be just fine.

And tonight, before I go to bed, I'll go outside and raise
my eyes to the heavens. I will stand in awe at
the beauty of the stars and the moon, and
I will praise God for these magnificent treasures.

As the day ends and I lay my head down on my pillow,
I will thank the Almighty for the best day of my life.
And I will sleep the sleep of a contented child,
excited with expectation because I know tomorrow
is going to be the best day of my life, ever!

ARMY AIR FORCE PHOTO WWII

Below are posters we saw during WWII...
"THE FOUR FREEDOMS"...these are the same 'Freedoms'
that our Men and Women fought and died for...
we intend to keep them, and will do battle to do so!!

FREEDOM OF SPEECH FREEDOM OF WORSHIP FREEDOM FROM FEAR FREEDOM FROM WANT

SOMEBODY TALKED

While the men were leaving to 'fight a war'... the workforce was dwindling...
the government called upon the women to 'join the work force'.
The poster below depicts "Rosie the Riveter"...
representing countless numbers of mothers, sisters, wives,
and girlfriends that took over the men's jobs.
Without them...we would not have been able to meet the mass
production for the 'weapons of war' .. 'ships' ..'aircraft'..'tanks'..
'ammunitions', and numerous other products, needed on the 'war front',
and producing goods for the home front as well.
Hats off to all the "Rosies" of all wars.

A Tribute to the United States
Source: Canadian newspaper editorial.

America: The Good Neighbor.
By Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian TV commentator in the early '70's

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable
editorial broadcast from Toronto. The editorial was
by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian Television commentator.
What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks
as printed in the Congressional Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for
the Americans as the most generous and possibly the
least appreciated people on all the earth.

Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy
were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans
who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other
billions in debts. None of these countries is today
paying even the interest on its remaining debts to
the United States.

When the franc was in danger of collapsing in 1956,
it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to
be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities,
it is the United States that hurries in to help.

This spring, 59 American communities were
flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions
of dollars into discouraged countries.
Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the
decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating
over the erosion of the United States dollar build
its own airplane. Does any other country in the world
have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet,
the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas 10?
If so, why don't they fly them?

Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider
putting a man or woman on the moon?

You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios.
You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles.
You talk about American technocracy, and you
find men on the moon-not once,
but several times-and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs
right in the store window for everybody to look at.
Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded.
They are here on our streets, and most of them,
unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting
American dollars from Ma and Pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking
down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them.
When the Pennsylvania railroad and the New York Central
went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose.
Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the
help of other people in trouble.
Can you name me even one time when someone
else raced to the Americans in trouble?
I don't think there was outside help even
during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian
who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around.
They will come out of this thing with their flag high.
And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose
at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles.
I hope Canada is not one of those."

Stand proud, Americans.
