3-31-03 US health officials have warned that none of the anti-viral
drugs
and other treatments tested were effective against a flu-like disease that
has killed 56 people and made another 1500 sick around the world.
They also expanded their travel advisory, suggesting that anyone planning
non-essential travel to mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore or Hanoi,
Vietnam, "may wish to postpone their trips until further notice".
"The global epidemic continues to expand," said Dr Julie Gerberding, head
of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. "We recognise
this as
an epidemic that is evolving." The CDC has reported 62 cases of severe
acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, in the United States, and at least
35
cases have been reported in Canada, where three people have died.

authorities confirmed the hospitalization of a 35-year-old man who, like the two
others, lives in the southern province of Guangdong - a region under orders to
move aggressively against the disease.
The disclosure comes as China struggles to prevent another outbreak of
severe acute respiratory syndrome, the illness that spread from Guangdong last
year, sickening thousands worldwide and hobbling the region's economy.....
...............What became known as SARS was first noticed in Guangdong in late 2002 and went
on to sicken more than 8,000 people worldwide, killing 774 of them. That
outbreak waned in July.

Swarms of Small Quakes Hit Calif.

COSO JUNCTION, Calif. –– Scores of earthquakes – most of them tiny
– are shaking this area of the Southern California high desert.
One quake early Saturday and two on Friday were at least magnitude 3.0,
but the Inyo County Sheriff's Department said no injuries or damage were
reported.
They were among hundreds of mostly small earthquakes detected over the
last two weeks.

The 83 tornadoes that have hit the United States so far this month set
a record for the first half of October, according to the National Weather
Service. Last week alone 59 twisters struck.
“Despite the record number of tornadoes, there were no fatalities and
only twelve minor injuries during this most recent outbreak,” says Dan
McCarthy, a meteorologist at the federal Storm Prediction Center.
Last week tornadoes struck Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi,
Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas. “Just in those five days, there
were more than double the average number of October tornadoes,” says McCarthy.
“The average number of tornadoes in October since the National Weather
Service began tracking tornadoes in 1950 is 29 events. The previous record
for the first half of any October was set in 1998, when 47 confirmed tornadoes
hit various parts of the nation.” 83 in just the first two weeks of this
October is obviously a phenomenal weather event.
“October is not usually this active but, since we are only halfway through
this month, we are watching for
any further changes in atmospheric systems that could continue this
active trend,” McCarthy says.

The FBI has confirmed the first positive link between the 12 confirmed
anthrax cases in the US and the September 11 terrorist strikes.
Detectives
said there was a "clear link" between the terrorists targeting the US
and
American Media Inc, the Florida newspaper offices hit by the anthrax
scare.
And US Health Secretary Tommy Thompson described the outbreaks as
an "act of terrorism".
"There's no question it's bioterrorism. It's a biological agent," he
said.
"It's terrorism, it's a crime."
Conclusions
Roberts Stevens, a British-born photo editor who worked for The Sun
tabloid, died ten days ago from anthrax.
It has emerged that the wife of the paper's editor rented two
apartments
at Delray Beach, Florida, to two hijack suspects killed in the
September
11 suicide missions.
Michael Irish's wife, Gloria, a real estate agent, rented properties to
Hamza Alghamdi and Marwan al-Shehhi in the summer, said FBI
spokeswoman Judy Orihuela.
Al-Shehhi and Alghamdi were on United Airlines Flight 175, the second
jet to strike the World Trade Centre.
"There is now a link between the editor's wife and the terrorists," Ms
Orihuela said. But she added that the FBI was not drawing immediate
conclusions.
"Right now, it looks like a coincidence. We are not searching the
apartments at this time. We are focusing on this building."
Tested positive
Five other employees at American Media Inc are being tested for
exposure and more than a thousand other Americans have been checked.
Media organisations have been the target of all cases so far. Three
more
people have tested positive for exposure to anthrax, bringing the
number
of confirmed cases in the United States to 12.
The trio, from New York, all handled an envelope containing the disease
which infected an NBC worker.
New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said: "This does not mean they
have anthrax."

but “inept” release into a newspaper office building, according to one
of America’s leading military experts on biological weapons.
“I do not believe it was accidental,” Colonel (retd) Dick Spertzel,
who spent 28 years as a US Army biological weapons expert before becoming
the chief biological inspector in the United Nations drive to disarm Iraq,
told The Times yesterday.

Third Person Tests Positive for
Anthrax in Florida
BOCA RATON, Fla. (Reuters) - A third person has tested positive for anthrax
in Florida and the probe into the source of the disease
is now a criminal investigation, officials said on
Wednesday.
``We have an additional employee that has been found to have anthrax
present,'' said FBI special agent in charge Hector Pesquera.
Acting U.S. Attorney Guy Lewis said the investigation was now considered
a criminal probe. Pesquera stressed there was no indication the anthrax
was produced or caused by a
terrorist group or individuals related to the Sept. 11 attacks on New
York and Washington.
Investigators have been looking into the source of anthrax that killed
one man at the offices of tabloid publishers American Media Inc. in Boca
Raton, Florida. A mailroom employee,
was also exposed to the disease and on Wednesday officials announced
a 35-year-old woman tested positive.
Officials stressed the exposure was limited to the AMI building.
Experts say the rare disease can be used as a biological warfare agent.
But a senior government health official earlier on Wednesday sought to
allay any such fears in this case.
``If this was a massive exposure, there should be lots of people sick.
We are not finding that,'' Dr. Scott Lillibridge, U.S. Health and Human
Services Secretary Tommy Thompson's
special assistant for bioterrorism, told members of Congress in Washington.
But the Florida contamination has fueled fears in a public already on
edge over last month's hijack attacks.
Many Boca Raton residents have pointed to the fact that some of the
suspected hijackers lived in south Florida in recent months and some made
inquiries about crop-dusting planes.
Federal investigators grounded crop-dusters for a period last month
out of concern they could be used in biological or chemical attacks. Such
flights have now resumed.

Gen. Jack Singlaub, the former U.S. supreme commander of all
U.S. forces in Korea, told NewsMax that additional, more significant
attacks against the U.S. could take place in the next several weeks.
He warned that an escalation of terror – which might follow such an
elaborate scheme as we have already seen unfold – might include
the use of chemical or biological weapons of mass destruction.
General Singlaub said that he shared the views of NewsMax
national security consultant, Col. Stanislav Lunev, who has also
issued a similar warning.
"This is my view,” he said, "There is a possibility of a biological or
chemical attack.”
The view that additional attacks are likely is shared by the U.S.
government.
Fox News reported last evening that "lawmakers were told in
classified briefings that additional attacks are 'possible if not
probable' and they should not assume a false sense of security. This
message has been conveyed with a very deliberate and serious
level of magnitude."
"This is really war,” Gen. Singlaub told NewsMax.com. Singlaub
himself witnessed the fireball explosion at the Pentagon, he lives just

Blair warns of rogue nuclear strikes

TONY BLAIR gave warning yesterday of nuclear strikes
from the next generation of terrorists as he made plain that the war against
terrorism could be extended to the states that harboured them.
The Prime Minister and Jack Straw, the Foreign Secretary,
said that the world would be laying itself open to biological, chemical
and nuclear attack if it failed to counter the menace of terrorism now.
As both Houses of Parliament united behind the Government’s
readiness to join a military response to Tuesday’s outrages, Mr Blair said
that the action being prepared might change the present world order. In
a clear warning to countries such as Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya,
he said that those who harboured or helped terrorists had a choice: either
they could cease their protection of the West’s enemies, or they would
be treated as an enemy themselves.
Mr Blair is known to be anxious that the Americans take
their time to identify the perpetrators of the attacks so that there can
be no room for criticism. Pointedly he praised Mr Bush and the US Government
for proceeding with care. “They did not lash out. They did not strike first
and think afterwards. Their very deliberation is a measure of the seriousness
of their intent.”
Mr Straw gave a warning that Britain must develop its
defences against copycat attacks. He called the assault on America a “deliberate
act of war” and cautioned against appeasement.
Using some of the most hawkish language heard from a British
minister, he said that “turning the other cheek” would not appease the
terrorists but lead to a still greater danger. He said that governments
should draw lessons from the experience of appeasement in the 1930s.
