Occupation: Scientist

Group Affiliation: Linear Men

Known Relatives: None

Base of Operations: Mobile

First Appearance: Armageddon 2001 #1 (May, 1991)

Powers: Waverider's body was composed of tachyon particles and by reading a person's aura he could read their most probably future. Using multiple contacts he can read various futures, but each new future takes into account many variables and becomes less likely. This process takes but a moment, and leaves the subject with no memory of Waverider's touch.

History: As a youth Matthew Ryder's life was saved by a superhero, and as an adult he felt a connection to the heroes of the past. The year 2030 had no heroes, only Monarch and his Peacemakers, who ruled the world with an iron fist. Ryder became a brilliant if unstable research scientist and learned that Monarch was once a hero, but events in the year 2001 turned him evil. To learn more about the past he volunteered to be the human subject for a time travel experiment using the tachyon tracing principal, but was rejected. Other test subjects failed because they lacked willpower, something Monarch stripped from them, so Ryder was eventually admitted into the program. he became a being of pure tachyon particles, and found himself in the past as Waverider. He determined to seek out the hero who would become Monarch and prevent Monarch's reign, and his own future from ever occurring.

(DC One Million #2) - Waverider and the Linear Men investigated the appearance of Justice Legion A in the 21st Century. In the Legion’s future of the 853rd Century there existed a Superman even though Linear Men records indicated that Gog killed Superman in the 21st Century. Matthew Ryder got a glimpse at hypertime, which allowed such a confliction.
