History: (Challengers of the Unknown vol. 1 #57)-An unnamed criminal scientist was working on a giant atom-smasher when the cyclotron suddenly overloaded and bombarded him with energy. He was transformed into Power Man, and immediately set out to conquer the world. After a rampage he broke into a power plant to recharge himself, and was confronted by the Challengers of the Unknown. He easily dispatched them, re-powered himself, and went on another rampage. Power Man was almost apprehended by police officers using knockout gas, but was rescued by Tino Manarry. Tino promised to help Power Man stay out of jail in exchange for Power Man's help in destroying the Challengers. Power Man managed to absorb the entire power network of the east coast, causing a monumental blackout. Tino and Power Man once again confronted the Challengers, but Tino had a change of heart and turned against his partner. Tino lured Power Man into the ocean, causing Power Man's energy to be conducted off into the water. In a matter of moments he lost all the energy he had absorbed, including the initial radiation that transformed him into Power Man. Power Man was now powerless, and the Challengers sent him off to prison.
