Powers: Thirteen was an unabashed skeptic who possessed keen powers of analysis and observation.

History: Thirteen was the latest in a long line of thinkers persecuted as witches and warlocks because people were small-minded and didn't understand advanced science. Thirteen's father made him promise that he would never believe his life was governed by anything besides natural causes. His father died in a bizarre car crash, and Thirteen closed his ancestral home Doomsbury Hall and moved to the city. he became a ghost-breaker, investigating and debunking paranormal phenomena.

Dr. Thirteen's worldview was challenged when he met the Phantom Stranger, and he retired. He wrote about his career as a ghost-breaker until his wife Marie urged him to return to his profession.
