5. Course Description:computer hardware, software, Internet/information literacy, procedures, systems and human resources. It focuses on computer and information literacy, historical development of computers, the data processing cycle, operating systems, number systems, storage and retrieval methods, and system security. The Internet module focuses on Internet addresses/networks, search engines, browser activities.

II. COURSE PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:
1. Teach the fundamentals of computers and computer nomenclature, particularly with respect to personal computer hardware and software, and the World Wide Web.
2. Give students an in-depth understanding of why computers are essential components in business and society in general.
3. Present the material in a visually appealing and exciting manner that invites students to learn.
4. Make use of the World Wide Web as a repository of the latest information and as an integrated learning tool.
5. Offer alternative learning techniques with streaming audio and video on the Web, Learning Games, WebCT, and CyberClass.
6. Recognize the personal computer's position as the backbone of the computer industry and emphasize its use as a stand-alone and networked device.
7. Present strategies for purchasing, installing, and maintaining a personal computer.
8. Provide exercises and lab assignments that allow students to interact with a computer and actually learn by using the computer and the World Wide Web.
III. COURSE ORGANIZATION:
1. Classroom situation is lecture with times for lab. Each student will have a computer to explore the Internet. The website address is: www.scsite.com for Shelly Cashman. Your Instructors website is: www.angelfire.com/ar/ckhomebase/index.html.
2. Written tests will be given every 2 chapters.
3. Library assignment will be a Reaction Paper over material you have searched for on the Internet. The subject will be: anything that interests you about technology or computers. You are to write in your own words what the article is about and in the last paragraph tell your opinion of it. Turn in a copy of the article with the paper. We will discuss the format you are to use in class, and you will be given a sample to go by. The paper should be typed, double spaced, two pages in length. This paper will be due on October 27. This should be a time when it is not too rushed in other classes since it is after midterm.
5. Magazine articles brought in my students will be welcome. These articles help us stay up with technology.
IV. EVALUATION OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT:
1. Written Tests: 100 points each
2. Reaction Paper: 100 points
3. Final 100 points will not be comprehensive

VI. OTHER INFORMATION:
1. Attendance: Students are expected to attend this class regularly in order to satisfactorily complete the course.
2. Makeup Test Policy: Makeup Test Policy: No makeup tests will be given unless you have extenuating circumstances which would make you have to miss a test. Contact your instructor ahead of time, and you will be expected to take the test on your first day back. If you do not take the test then, you will receive a 0 for the test. Do not miss a test without contacting your Instructor first.
3. Late Assignments: Any assignments turned in late --will be assessed a 10% penalty.
