The Sectional Appendix remains one of the most under appreciated resources so far as railway history is concerned, its somewhat non-descript title bellying the wealth of information contained within its pages. The Sectional Appendix contained a list of running lines, additional running lines, loops, refuge sidings, stations, signal boxes, distances, speed restrictions, catch points, gradients and engine whistles. In addition, the books also contained local instructions regarding all manner of working practices which, when taken together, provide us with a picture of the railways as they were.

On October 1st 1960 British Railways issued a new set of Sectional Appendix to cover the entire country. It was a number of years before another set was issued, by which time the railway network had been transformed forever, steam banished from the system and countless route miles closed in the name of progress.

The following is a list of lines contained within the 1960 Sectional Appendices that are in my possession at this moment in time. Eventually I hope to cover the entire country but, as things stand at this moment in time, I only have completion in the London Midland Region (4 volumes) and the Eastern Region (3 volumes). The Scottish Region appears to have been covered by three volumes, two of which I have recently bought. The Southern Region was covered by an unknown number, one of which I have recently obtained, but the Western Region, well.... Nationalisation did nothing to dim the Great Western's determination to do all things differently, be it by adopting a diesel-hydraulic traction policy or by issuing smaller, and consequently more numerous, Sectional Appendix. The Western Region published appendices for the Birmingham, Shrewsbury, Gloucester, Newport, Cardiff, Swansea, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth, London, Swindon and Reading areas and possibly Wolverhampton to Birkenhead. As things stand I am only in possession of the volume covering the Gloucester area.
