Kios (Gemlik) has been established by a Greek commander who was returning from the war in 1390 B.C and this location has been named as Styits.
According to Arganouts there was a nice harbor when a city was established here and this harbor has been filled up with aluvions that were dragged from the mountains and hills in the back.
Gemlik has been under the rule of Egyptians, Romans, Persians, lonians,Byzantians and Ottomans, respectively. This place has been conquered by the Ottomans in the period of Osman Ghazi.
The name of the city is referred as Ceus, Kios, Ghio, Gio, Prusa in various sources and this harbor has been used as a quay for the armies to be send to the inner parts of the Anatolia during the Crusades. And it has been referred with names such as Civitot, Civitpot .
The name of the districts has been changed from Gemilik to Gemlik in time.
Gemlik has been established at the 30 km. northest of Bursa at a quiet coast of Marmara Sea.
Gemlik Gulf is generally calm and not rough. The gulf which the widest section is 35 km from east to west and 10-15 km from south to north is formed of two capes which are facing each other (Tuzla and Kapakli Capes-which you will see in the below Sunset Pictures ).
The climate of Gemlik has the characteristics of Mediterranean climate. Generally the summers are hot and dry while the winters are warm and rainy.
In terms of tourism, Gemlik is the districts which has a touristic characteristic of the first degree. Domestic and foreign tourists who come from touristic motels-hotels, camps and pensions are welcomed in the resting houses in Kursunlu, K. Kumla, B. Kumla, Karacaali villages.
Agriculture is quite developed in Gemlik and most of the people is engaged with agriculture. Olive growing is the leading sector The production of apple, pear, peach of high quality has been initiated in the recent years. Ưn addition, food canning is also realized.
Cattle-breeding is more common in the villages which are close to the districts while it is less in the mountain villages. Fishing is also an important source of income and almost all kinds of fish exist in the sea of the gulf. Trade of salty olive, olive oil soap are some of the leading sectors. Industry is rapidly developing in Gemlik with the factories of viscon and gelatin production,production of fertilizers and chemical products,pipe production,iron plate and iron production,steel production ,food industry based on canned products, pickles and various kinds of olive.
