Rose Neal

Rose was born in Alford in Lincolnshire in 1871, we don’t know the exact date because Rose changed her age many times in her life time. She was the daughter of Moses Neal and Sarah Ann Hewson.

Rose Died 30 January 1948 and was cremated and the family have no knowledge of what happened to her ashes.

The family was known to believe in the supernatural, and at some time were linked to the Salvation Army. Rose died of Chronic Nephritis and diabetes. On her death certificate it list her father as Charles Neal this is an error by the person suppling the information as his name was Moses, it also lists her as being born in Devon. Rose thought she was Scottish, so with all the changes to her age and information I would say that she could neither read or write. Rose used to wear a small Scottish looking cap but I can find no record of the family ever going to or from Scotland.

Rose was married on the 29th of may 1889 to James McLean in Auckland it is written on her marriage certificate that she was 16 and he was 26. James was the son of Thomas McLean from Ireland and Ellen McLean(?). Moses Neal her father and William Neal her brother were both witnesses at the wedding.

Rose and James had a son Fredrick Neal McLean who was born in 5th October 1888 - Fred was born in Auckland and Rose is listed as being 19 years old.

It must be noted that Fred is also listed as Illegitimate but he was registered under the McLean name. James was living in Opotiki and more than likely met Rose in Auckland, James worked with horses and so did Moses so there may be a tie up there. Also James family worked at the CHELSEA SUGAR WORKS as did Rose's family. James was a drayman and worked carting goods in Opotiki Bay of Plenty New Zealand. Rose did not appear on the elect roll for Opotiki in 1911 it is my opinion that she went to Auckland to her family.

In 1914 Roses was listed on the Waitemata Elect roll living at Tennyson Street Birkenhead

In 1919 living at 44 Seafield View Road through to 1922.

In 1931 she is living at 13 Wood Street in Ponsonby, this house was owned by her daughter Margaret McLean. It was in this house that Rose lived until the time of her death.

Rose and James had the following Children:

  1. FREDRICK NEAL McLEAN born 5 Oct 188 in Auckland Died 20 August 1963 and is buried with his wife Ann Eliza Stone (born 1881 England - died 25 Nov 1973) in the 18th Ave Cemetery Tauranga New Zealand. They had no children. Fred served in the NZ Army and it is said that he was the reason Rose and James went from Opotiki to Auckland when Fred was in the Army. Ann came out to New Zealand to marry Fred and he took her to live at cape Runaway in 1928. They where married April 29th 1920 at St David's Chruch Kyber Pass Auckland. Ann was the daughter of Joseph Taylor and Ellen Taylor of Bridgewater England. Ann was 39 at the time of the marriage.
  2. RUBY PEARL McLEAN was born 19th may 1891 in Opotiki Bay of Plenty New Zealand. On Ruby's birth certificate it list Rose being born in Sheffield yet another example of he lack of knowledge of herself. Ruby married RICHARD JENSEN son of Neils Peter Jensen and Else Mary Neilsen of Denmark. Richard was born in Ashley Clinton Hawke's Bay New Zealand. They were married in 1912 the date is not on the certificate, in the home of Mr T Johnstone, Richards sister Milly Johnstone house. Ruby died 24 may 1963 in Auckland and is buried with Richard in Auckland. See the Jensen web page for details of the children 10 children.
  3. MARGARET ANNE McLEAN Born 27th July 1895 in Opotiki. Margaret never married but it was said that she did have a son I have no trace of this person. Margaret lived with a Mr Quaffe in Wood Street. Margaret was a very smart dresser and was known to be a woman who liked doing things for herself, a story told to me by Moreen Corbett that Margaret was painting the house and stripping off the paint with a blow torch she burnt the wood. She worked as a cook/housekeeper in some sort of Home of the North Shore (Wilson Home). She also took in borders. On Margaret's birth certificate James signs his name with an X. Margaret died 6th April 1983 and is buried in Onehunga Cemetery Auckland.
  4. ROSE ELLEN McLEAN born 8 July 1898 in Opotiki. Little is know of "Rose" but that she did go by the name of "sis". She married Tom Henning and moved to Australia and had two daughters and a son (Alan). The two daughter's names are Alison and Marie both are still living in Australia.
  5. FLORENCE ESTHER McLEAN born 1902 in Opotiki. She died 1st Sept `925 in Auckland and is buried in Wiakumete cemetery her father James is buried with her.
  6. EVELYN AMY SARA McLEAN born 7 Oct 1904 in Opotiki. Evelyn married William Wright. William's father was from Glasgow and mother born in New Zealand but names unknown, information supplied by William Wright junior (Bill). Evelyn (Eveline) died 21 Sept 1985 in Auckland and was cremated. They had three children: Dallas Rose (married Wirix) Jocelyn Florence (married Vaneck) and William born 1927 married Constance ???.
  7. JAMES HENRY McLEAN born 1908 - Jim never married but looked after his mother for many years then he moved in with his sister Evelyn. Jim was reported to have been very clever at carpentry and made furniture. He died 4 August 1978 in Onehunga Auckland.

Rose was their 5th child, and came to New Zealand aboard the Rakaia, which docked in Lyttleton Sept 2 1882; her 9 bothers and sisters also made the trip. Her father Moses was a nominated immigrant for the Foster and Grant Land Scheme. In 1883 they lived in Te Aroha Wairongoma Gold Mine. Moses worked with the horses that pulled the carts up to the mine entrance.

In 1884 the family is listed as living at Newton Road in Auckland.
