B.Harrison Benjamin Harrison lost the popular vote to Grover Cleveland and became President of the Unites States in 1888. The election of 1888 produced the last sure case of a candidate winning the presidency while losing the popular vote. The incumbent president,Grover Cleveland won the popular vote 46 to 43 percent. But the Republican challenger, Benjamin Harrison of Ohio, won a 233-168 electoral majority.
This result didn't stem from fraud or chicanery, but from the fact that Harrison won several big states by small margins, while Cleveland racked up huge wins in the South, as all Democrats did in that period. For example, Harrison carried New York and its 36 electoral votes with a 49-48 percent popular vote, while Cleveland carried South Carolina by a breathtaking 82-17 percent but only got nine electoral votes for it.
