Gulf Stream Influences on Climate

Notice on the diagram below how the cold water current affects the gulf stream. Changes in the salinity can cause this to change rapidly.

It has been known for years that the gulf stream influences the weather patterns of the Earth. Recent studies and information are revealing something shocking about this. If global warming continues to add fresh water to the ocean (by melting ice caps) the gulf stream may change. This change could actually plummet the Earth into another ice age.

Although this is contrary to what the common effects of global warming are it is still a possibility. This change would likely affect the northern regions of the globe and change life there permanently.

Use the related links section to the left to view recent articles and studies about this topic.

Please realize that before the ice age would occur the most immediate effect would be a gradual warming of the Earth. The ice age would likely take at least a few hundred years to occur.
