TOKYO, Japan (GTA) -- What merely one-week ago was a rag-tag group of young twenty-somethings, is now a motivated and disciplined Eikwaiwa teaching force to be reckoned with. Arriving in Japan with only a suitcases full of dockers, an adequate supply of clean underpants, and the latest Coldplay playing on their Ipods, it was unclear if these fresh-faced university graduates could be turned into lean, mean Eikaiwa teaching machines.
![]() Waking up at 9:00 a.m. has never been easy for twenty-four year old Paula Berman. But waking up and having an ECC trainer screaming commands is nothing less then hell. "YOU PATHETIC DORKS! YOU WILL PREPARE A SUITABLE WARM-UP BEFORE THIS WEEK IS OUT OR YOU'LL HAVE A ONE-WAY TICKET BACK TO MOMMY AND DADDY BACK IN MELBOURNE! DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR GEEKS!?" ECC trainers hope to break down the new recruits in order to build them back up in accordance with the core ECC teaching philosophy. "YOU ARE ONE SORRY ANIME WORSHIPPING GEEK! YOU WILL LEARN TO FOCUS YOUR DRILLING AND EXPAND PROPERLY ON THE TARGET LANGUAGE OR I WILL PERSONALLY MAKE YOUR LIFE EXTREMELY MISERABLE." One member of the new recruitees, Sam Fedders, explained how a new bond of friendship had develeped among the group members. "When you are out there teaching, your part of a team. A band of Eikaiwa brothers and sisters if you will. You guys...I love you guys! I love the ECC December 11th thru 18th Teacher Training Group!" By Saturday, the teachers from the initial training had been dispatched to their respective schools across the Kanto area--directly into what Sam Fedders refered to as the "danger zone." The best of the best. Or at least, the best of the December 11th thru 18th. ECC head trainer Tom Kealdy remarked that seeing the looks of the new ECC teachers as they recieved their ECC pin reminded him of the reason why he got in the training business in the first place. "Those geeks are now worthy of being called ECC teachers. Whever they go in life, they'll always be able to wear the pin proudly. They are all precious so I sometimes refer to them as 'my babies'. And now my babies are leaving me to further their adventure. Good bye, my babies. May you never forget what we learned in these few days. Stay strong." | |||
