Long-term English teaching may also have long-lasting consequences according to study released

Lab mice regressed to playing with poo

BALTIMORE, Maryland (GTA) -- In an article published in the March 28 issue of English Teacher Neurology, scientists at the John Hopkins- Medical Center used magnetic resonance spectroscopy to take measurements of three parts of the brains of 25 participants who had taught English in Japan for three or more years and then compared them with measurements of the same regions in the brains of 22 people who had no history of English teaching behaviour.

Results showed that teaching English excessively led to a drastic loss in function, inability to use vocabulary, and a distinct type of slurred speech where words and syllables are unnecessarily emphasized along and accompanied by wild, erratic gestures.

"Some participants showed a loss of brain power comparative to what you would expect from a chronic binge drinker. Things like reaction time, language and motor skills, reasoning ability, memory, and the ability to learn new information were all severely damaged,h a John Hopkins researcher said.

"What causes this is not clear. But we speculate it is related to a lack of meaningful brain input, excessive repeating, mind-numbing dialogue etc."

The Neuropsychological Society is recommending that teachers avoid teaching more than eight hours a day.

"We subjected rats to 12 hours of consecutive English lessons for a 30 day period,hNeuro Society president Pat Tehran Swift. gThe findings showed a definite decline in brain activity in the rats subjected to English conversation when compared to the rats that were kept active with a light to moderate stimuli."

"After twelve hours, the English conversation mice basically couldn't do anything but sit in the corner and play with their poo-poo."
