English teacher makes firm stand on favorite actor issue
Refuses to dump Robert Shaw in favor of expediency
TOKYO, Japan (GTA) -- First year eikaiwa teacher Derek Reginald has made clear just exactly who his "favorite actor" is. Despite the limited amount of fame Robert Shaw has in Japan, Derek has no plans to change to a more current and universally known actor, such as Brad Pitt or Al Pacino.
"It's not like he's a nobody. I mean, it's Robert Shaw! Everybody has seen Jaws and remembers Quint, right? Why should I dumb down my favorite actor just to avoid the four or five minute period needed to explain?"
In addition to his famous role as Quint, the scarred and tormented fisherman in Jaws, Shaw has also appeared in plenty of other films.
"If you ask the students if they have seen The Sting or From Russia with Love, there is a decent chance that they might remember the film," added Derek.
Ethics also play a role in Derek's refusal.
"Look. I'm not going to sit in the booth and lie to my student's face and say my favorite actor is Tom Cruise just to keep the lesson moving."
Derek's students have voiced their support of his efforts.
"Robert Shaw is from England. I like Derek's lesson very much because he is always friendly," said 50-year old housewife Tomoko in an interview with the GTA.
In addition to acting, Robert Shaw was also an accomplished writer.
