Report: Nova abstinence policy towards social interaction an "abysmal failure"
Teachers, students engage in socialization in record numbers
TOKYO, Japan (GTA) -- A new study claims that Nova's 10-year emphasis on abstinence programs has done little to stop teacher/student social-interaction.
An article, which appears in April's issue
of the Journal of English Teacher Health, is a follow-up to a study presented in March of last year at the National Teacher-Student Interaction Prevention Conference in Toronto, Canada.
According to the article, teachers and students are engaging in social behaviour at an alarming rate.
"We're seeing a lot more forms of teacher-student interactive-social behaviour. Some teachers prefer doing it in a cafe. Other cases show teachers and students that enjoy doing it in restaurants, karaoke joints, and even in public parks,"
It isn't only hetero-cialization problem. It's also homo-cialization.
"There are many teachers that would think nothing of engaging in wild, promiscuous socialization with multiple-partners of both sexes."
The study has drawn fire from conservatives and those who endorse total abstinence as the only acceptable policy for Nova teachers.
Leslie Unrugh, president of the National
Abstinence Association in Abilene, Kansas, told the GTA that she believes that report is "bogus."
"Only strict abstinence is necessary and sufficient for avoiding the negative consequences of English teacher/student social situations.
Abstinence-only programs currently cost Nova's schools 175 billion yen annually, according to Bill anti Research statistics show increase in teacher/student social interaction Smith, senior vice-president for the British Information and Education Council.
Proponents of abstinence particularly promote teachers to sign a "SUPERSTAR TEACHERS! SAY NO to Social Interaction Forever! Pledge."
These Non-interaction pledging began to be promoted in the late 1990s, to encourage teachers to abstain from public interaction with any student for the rest of their lives.
It has been reported that over 2,500 young teachers around the
country have signed the SUPERSTAR TEACHERS! SAY NO! pledge cards, which oblige individuals to make a commitment to NOVA, myself, my family... to be socially-abstinent with all students from this day on, throughout my life."
"Non-socializing pledges do not work. They do not prevent the sort of interaction that its proponents claim," Rachel Hughley told the GTA last Sunday.
"That study found that teachers who pledged abstinence were just as likely to engage in social interaction as their non-pledging peers," she added.
"As a social policy, the Nova abstinence policy has been an abysmal failure and has ultimately failed to prevent social exchange among young adults," he concluded.
"We need to both prepare and educate Nova teachers about the realities of social-interaction."
