American International School Undokai marred by parents brawl, again
Fourteen injured, more face charges following annual white/red confrontation
TOKYO, Japan (GTA) -- American Eagle International School's sports festival came to a premature end as parents fighting in the stands spoiled what should have been a celebration of youth sports.
According to police reports, Nick Lowell, a father of one of the red team members, began yelling at the teacher referees claiming that his kid had been tripped in the 4-legged relays.
Lowell claims the teachers at the school were 'out to get his kid' and were favoring the white squad the entire day.
The argument eventually escalated as a parent from the white squad team began to yell profanity in the direction of the red squad parents and supporters. Teachers attempted to hold the red squad parents back, however they eventually were unable to stop them from charging over into the white section.
Police said that there were numerous fistfights as well as one case of a pregnant woman ripping off a metal plaque from the school wall and hurling it in the direction of one of the teachers. Another parent was forcibly removed to the parking lot where she began to protest their ejection by defecating on top of one of the cars.
"These sort of incidents are all to common in society," explained sociologist Sarah Gladwell. "The real victims in this case appear to be the children. It just seems like the parents of the kids start taking the sports festival way to seriously."
School officials are looking into reforming their Undokai policy, as this is the third year in a row where violence has disrupted the activities.
