English conversation teacher forum to be held near Yurakucho station

Choice or biology? Talks held in hope of discovering why Japanese cannot learn English this Friday night

TOKYO, Japan (GTA) -- An upcoming forum to debate the specific causes of why Japananese are utterly incapable of learning English is to be held in Tokyo's Hibiya district, outside Yurakucho station near the little room which houses the beer vending machines, where people can smoke while standing next to a small wooden table.

Those who have already confirmed their attendance include Matt Meddaugh, Brendan Stillson, and Rachel Wallace from the Shinbashi Nova school. In addition, former Nova English teacher and current Berlitz teacher Marc Peters is expected.

The forum talks are expected to settle once and for all the debate on whether the inability to learn English is something Japanese are born with, or whether it is a choice.

Is it a choice or is it biological?

Matt and Brendan are known proponents of the "biological" theory, which holds that Japanese brains contain a unique defect, where a key enzyme necessary for foreign language acquisition is insufficiently produced.

The theory has come under fire recently by those who claim this idea is not only idiotic, but also racist. Instead of a biological defect, these opponents argue that English deficiencies are merely caused by "laziness" and that most Japanese students simply "choose" to waste their time and money.

Friday night's forum should give both sides the opportunity to make their case.

Nova co-worker Darren Lee has declined to attend this weeks forum after making a dramatic early exit from last weeks talks, which attempted to pinpoint the reasons why Japanese men were "such losers" as well as why the Japanese education system is so crap compared to Canada.

The forum is expected to begin at approximately 9:30 P.M. on Friday night.
