Jack Worthing- The main character of the play, he loves and wishes to marry Gwendolen, but he cant get the approval of his mother to marry her. When he's in the city, he goes by the name Earnest; but when he's in the city he goes by the name Jack which he thinks is his real name. He was discovered in a handbag as a baby. Algernon Moncrieff- He lives in the city. At the beginning of the play, he thinks Jacks name is Earnest. He lives in a nice flat in London. When he hears of Jack's attractive niece in the country, he goes out there to visit her, then he falls in love with her. Gwendolen Fairfax- Shes in love with Jack, but she cant love him if he were named anthing other than Earnest. Cecily Cardew- She falls in love with Algernon while he was under the name of Earnest, and she said she could never love a man not named Earnest. Lady Bracknell-The mother of Gwendolen. She forbids her to marry Jack, because she thinks hes not suitable with his handbag background. Dr. Chasuble- The rector of the manor house. Miss Prism- She has a mysterious past, she always flirts with Lane who's algernon's butler. Lane- Algernon's butler, he only appears in act one. Merriman- The butler at the manor house.
