Jon's older Drag the River songs

Thanks to Eric "Educated Idiot" Hinkle,
Grover, Chris Sabo, and Joe Ward
for helping with these lyrics.

Some of these songs are from the old DTR demo tape, and have not appeared on Hobo's Demo's or compilations.  These songs are noted with **.

---bug country

southbound, rolling toward the 36 highway line
double-wide piggy-back trailer passin' to my side
when i make town i'm not sure what i'll do
i could win this race, but i wanna lose
breaking up was all my fault
fallin' down still starin' should have never got up
i'm half of the way to your town
you won't even know at all that i was even around
got new and old bad habits on this drive
and i'm coming home next sunday, pray that i'm still alive
all this late night driving's really bringing me down
the heater, the loneliness, the rumbling sound

the hardest part is being alone
but the hateful part is coming home
and i'm half of the way to your town
you won't even know at all that i was even around
got new and old bad habits on this drive
and i'm comin' home next sunday, pray that i'm still alive
all this late night driving's really bringing me down
the heater, the loneliness, the rumbling sound
well i'm partial to the travelling life
every girl i meet i wish was my wife
finished, not through

---calloused heart #1

kinda feel like i'm shedding my calloused heart
but breaking open my chest is just the start
starting out's an ending every time
like cutting open your heart does it every time
kinda feel like fallin' down, kinda feel like breaking ground
mostly i'm just talking, talking to myself

if you feel like coming back in time
well it's too late for you, i'm not that kind
and if you feel like getting back what's mine
like hardly getting over i'm not that kind
kinda feel like fallin' down, kinda feel like breaking ground
mostly i'm just talking, talking to myself

there's a stream and a train and a highway bend
another avenue i never win
and if there was a way to expire this heart
like hardly getting over i do my part
if you could see me there
then you just might care this time
always felt like dying, and i felt it all along
i'm sorry i felt like dying all this time

---crutchless

the crutches make your legs so strong
but you're hating it, all the while
and feeling safe is just a warning
how you're keeping it needing it behind
you know that i'd just weigh you down
an evil thought but i'd just weigh you down
if you're counting on healing
which side you're on
you don't know what you're feeling
so it's better that you move along

seeing you is the hardest thing that i can do
the hardest part is keeping the distance
and if i could you know i'd lie
about anything at all to make me more unkind
you know that i'd just weigh you down
an evil thought but i'd just weigh you down
and if you're counting on healing
which side you're on
you don't know what you're feeling
so it's better that you move along
well it's turning, well it's turning into something obscene
i'm only learning what i'm in
you weren't even a friend of mine
and to begin
hey, what i'm in
it was a cheap thing

---confession**

There are virtually no differences (lyrically) between this and the version that appears on Who Wants to Play Bass?

---mars motor

said on the radio you'd never take me back
heard every song you sung
well i tried just to hear your voice ringing in my ear
i was wasting time
lungs and heart they bleed awhile
but you never seem to get by
hey i could just be joking how this could get to me
but this won't break my spine
fine i'm not waiting any longer
fine enough you got that attitude
how this even got up on my shoulders
well i'm down, down
lungs and heart they bleed awhile
but you've never seen the smile
hey i could just be joking how this could get to me
but this won't break my spine
fine i'm not waiting any longer
fine enough you got that attitude
how this even got up on my shoulders
well i'm down, down

well hey i never tried
and i could stay here but i'd
never fall cause i'm barely sleeping
martian motor could fix my car real good
and give me rocket fins so i could fly away
green guys they would fix my motor good
of course, i couldn't pay, that's not my car i'd say
i could make it another day goodbye

---next time not around

changing your mind
breaks like a heart in two
shakes like a broken truth
rattles your kind
faking the feeling to
give in to feeling screwed
did you notice
notice that i'm
hating the others that brought me to you
changing your mind
rolling up, pushing me down
dragging me all over town
don't worry, won't make a sound
till you notice
i'm not even around
this time close, next time i'm not around

hey did you notice
i wasn't even around
hey, where you are
i wasn't even around
this time close, next time i'm not around
this time close, next time i'm not around

---not fine**

The demo version varies only slightly from the Armchair version. The only real difference I've noticed is the line "Guess I made you mad or better yet I made you SAD." If you've heard both versions, and you want to alert me to any important difference that you've found, do it here.

---back to God

The words in parentheses are more or less -understood- to be there.  Maybe not every line begins with "You can always...", but most of them sound like it's there.

wrote this for my mother
like a song she might've heard
(a) familiar melody (she'd) sing out loud
lately I've been failing
family and friends
it really all comes down to sin

drinking like i'm passing
swallowing the pain
it's cleaning out my insides for a while
but i never have forgotten
one thing still remains
(you can) always go back to God
always go back to God
(you can) always go back to God
i know you're life's been troubled
it's been hard
family, friends, and hard luck
one thing still remains
(you can)always go back to God
outstretched in the water
when i was 8 years old
old enough to save my life from town
and i never have forgotten
glamorizing pain
drinking in till i drown
you can always go back before you drown
it's the train of faith and fate
(that) rattles on
no matter how you've sinned
just don't take advantage of him
(you can)always go back to God...
i know you're life's been troubled
it's been hard
no matter how you've sinned
just don't take advantage of him
(you can)always go back to God...
