"Ranma Nibunnoichi"(literally Ranma one-half) was created by Manga artist Rumiko Takahashi, who just finished her previous series, Urusei Yatsura. Ranma began appearing in the September 1987 edition of Shounen Sunday, and it soon became a hit to new and old fans, alike.
The story's concept is fairly simple: Ranma and his father, Genma, visit the famous, yet Cursed Springs of Jusenkyo to improve their martial arts skills. While training, they acquired the curses themselves. Now, Ranma turnes into a red-haired girl version of himself and Genma turns into a giant panda when splashed with cold water. The effect can be reverted with hot water, but only until the next time they get splashed with cold water. All this and the pre-arranged engagement of Ranma to one of Genma's friend's, Soun's, daughters. The result? A romance with a twist of gender-bending with the addition of more complications to the plot.
