Technical and Historical Notes:
The Varona class was designed as a smaller class than the legendary Pegasus class but with greater performance in mind. Despite it's smaller size it still retains the same mecha deck design of the Pegasus class. The concept of a fast ship to reach theaters while they are still in progress was the driving force in development of past war times. In time the class proved to be an indispossable general purpose patrol and rescue ship. It saved more lives than any other patrol ship before. It's other missions range from intelligence collection and special forces delivery to anti-ship and strike warfare. It is a multi-mission vessel, capable of deploying to forward space areas to search out and destroy enemy ships and to support other forces.
The design proved to be so effective that as time progressed and technological improvements were made to the ship's systems, rather than build a completely new class it was decided to reuse the design, but fitted with newer, more advanced systems. Based on research and development studies, performed in part by the Madagaska which had been specifically modified during refit to serve as a technology test bed, several major improvements were made to the basic design. In addition to internal upgrades to improve the ship's sensors and to increase battle survival, the hull was also modified to increase fuel capacity. Furthermore, by strengthening the superstructure combined with newer and additional engines the design's performance capability was inproved. The Improved Varona class served for another two decades until replaced by the Aoyagi class which represents the return of the firepower doctrine.
The improved version has an increased fuel storage of 50% as well as an increase of 50% more thrust due to newer and additional engines. As a results the ship has an increase of 40% in performance and 31.25% in range.
In the extended range configuration a two-way trip to the asteroid belt or a three-way trip to Mars is possible. However, performance is reduced to 105% compared to the original design.

To control the military and strenghtening the power of the SRA the Guard was established.
According to unconfirmed information there is at least one Guard agent on every SRA ship.
To enforce control of the Guard a special independent fleet of its own was commissioned.
These heavily armed and armored ships are exclusively used by the Guard, which in itself is a division of Intelligence. Wherever these ships appear, even fellow Ships have reason to fear them, as they would as readily attack their own people as enemies, if they get in their way.

The whole ship was design as an asteroid cannon with an engine in the back. The roughly 2 km long barrel can shoot up to 50 m asteroids at high velocities. The ship has an estimated storage capacity of 20 such asteroids. Transport ships are required for replenishing. The firing rate of the cannon is unknown, but is estimated to be between 30 min and an hour.
This weapon is capable of destroying any planetary defenses in a single shot.
Escort ships are required to deploy weapon in battle zone safely. It is possible that multiple ships of this class are under constructio.
