This guide is to help you setup your Jebo aquarium canister filter as most of those sold on ebay do not have instructions.

This guide is good for the Odyssea cs4, the lifetech 828, 838, and the new model the newport B28. First remove the motor unit by lifting the clamps on top. Pull the motor off, and remove the filter basket cover. They remove the filtration baskets and take all media out of the plastic wrappers(not out of the nylon ones. Put the filter baskets back in order making sure the ruber washers on top of each filtration baskets are seated and connected correctly.Fill canister with aquarium water. Reseat the motor and close the clamps.Find the two valve units(intake larger valve, outake smaller valve.)Connect them to intake and outtake ports on the top of the motor unit.Make sure valves are in open position. Attach green tubing to both inlet and outlet valves and secure with bottom nut on the valves.Next attach larger utube with strainer on the end to the intake valve and secure it. Attach outlet tubing to the outlet valve and secure. Attach utube to the outlet hose.Attach the outlet spout to the hose(long tube with holes) and secure it on the inside of your aquarium with u suctions. Put intake tube in aquarium and secure with u suction unit.Unit should be below the aquarium and if hoses too long cut them. Plug the unit in and it should start. If not press down three time on the primer button on top of the motor until it does.If unit leaks while in operation check all connects and repeat the process.Clean the filter media every two or three months or if flow decreases, and repeat installation procedures to resetup. I like to use internal filters which I clean weekly(read review internal filter) to prolong my cleaning of the canister units. Troubleshooting.1 if unit does not flow right check to make sure valves are open and not clogged and press primer until flow is correct. 2 If water leaks around motor cover, remove and make sure the gasket is in place and is clean and not broken. 3.If motor makes noise make sure the canister is primed and flowing properly, and or clean the magnet impellor unit. CLEANING FILTER MEDIA: 1 Remove the top filter motor by lifting up on filter buckles. 2 remove filter baskets(remember the order they are in) and gentle wash out pads, carbon, and bio media and or replace with new. Never use soap, bleach, or detergent, and use cold water only.Hot water will kill beneficial bacteria in the media, and or warp the filtration baskets.3 Replace all filter media and put baskets back in same order(make sure gaskets on the baskets are correctly in place) and make sure the connection tube on each basket interfaces with the others.4 Refill filter basket with water from aquarium, 5 Reseat motor on top making sure gasket is clean and in place.6 Clamp down buckles. 7 Plug in filter after puttin hoses back in aquarium. 8 If it does not start flowing pump the primer button until it does. Also people are emailing me about the order of the filter media, so here goes from the bottom up its goes carbon, zeolite, biorings, fine pads, coarse sponge at top. Update, a lot of people are emailing me that the canister filters are a pain to clean, and do not aireate enough for larger aquariums. My solution to this is buy one of the new inexpensive Jebo internal filter units and use them along with the canister units. They use a magnet drive submersible powerhead with a filter attachment plus air injection system. They prefilter the water at high speed of food and larger debri which will clog your canister filter. When using them with the canister units you will only have to clean the canister about every six months. Clean the internal filter when it is dirty or flow slows down.This units are inexpensive, go inside the aquarium and are equipped with an attachable air injection system so you can increase you surface aireation and have almost a maintenance free clean aquarium. This guide is for the beginner saltwater aquarist and its aim is to educate you on the purpose and use of protein skimmers as well as to help you decide which is best for you.The purpose of a protein skimmer is to cause the more denser saltwater organic components like proteins to separate out of the water in order to keep nitrates, and nitrites(dissolved wastes) at a lower level.The ocean areas where tropical saltwater fish live have millions of gallons of water and lots of live organism like corals, algae, live rock etc in it to keep water quality at its best, In an aquarium environment with limited water this is very difficult to do without repeated water changes.Live corals, fish, and inverts caught out of the ocean must have similiar water quality in the home environment to survive, and protein skimmers are one of the best ways next to wet dry systems and live rock to accomplish this.Most proteins skimmers, like the Jebo 180 on the left use a cylindrical chamber somewhere in the unit to act as a seperation chamber. They use different method of injecting air into the chamber,(powerhead venturi injectors, needle jet injectors and or wood airstones)and the air acts as a mixer which thickens the water, and as it swirls in a circular motion the fine air bubbles link with the proteins and drive them to the surface where they overflow into a collection cup. Protein skimmer specials buy online at our store This method in simple terms is kind of like how an eggbeater works. The egg is thin and runny but after the beater stirs it up it thickens, The water in the skimmer is thickened, the air strips the thicker particles out and flow upward and overflow into the collection cup where you empty it and remove them. There are different types of protein skimmers-the hang on cylinder type like the Jebo 180, seaclone and berlin types, and hang on types like the prism, via aqua mulit skimmer, the Cpr backback, and the supreme skilter 250.Some of these double as filters and protein skimmers. For a begginer saltwater aquarist I recommend the hangon backpack type(shown above) as they are easier to adjust, double as filters, are economical, and last of all have less tendancy to overflow.The cylinder type are hard to adjust(Jebo, Seaclone etc) and overflow over the top into your living room if not emptied regularly, or adjusted properly. I have tested about six of them and if not watched carefully they over flow out the top. The hanging backpack type will overflow into the tank and not make a mess.The skilter(top of article picture) and the via aqua skimmer are the most economical and easyist units to adjust and use and they also filter the water and have room to add bio balls so they can double as hang on wet dry units.Regular maintenance and adjustment of all protein skimmers is necessary to keep them working properly.However nothing works well to keep water quality up in your aquarium like a biweekly 20% water change so dont forget to do this. Last of all I want to intoduce a new product for nano aquariums, (those are small saltwater aquariums, like the nano cube, aquapod, marineland eclipse, etc, and are usually 12g or less. This product is the new fussion skimmer, small in size(6in) it fits inside the aquarium and uses about 1/2 in headroom so it can fit under the hoods on nano cubes, It works great and comes complete with its own magnetic drive air injection system.Its only drawback is a very small collection cup so empty it often.

Ultra violet sterilizers are a great addition for any marine aquarium, freshwater tank or pond.

They are mulit functional and work great for keeping your aquarium or pond free from algae and parasites. They have a dual function is this, they kill free floating bacteria, parasites and algae spores as the water passes through the unit.Most units have four main parts, a flow chamber made with Pvc, and internal quartz sleeve, a high intensity U.V. germicidal bulb(which goes in the quartz sleeve) and a transformer of sorts. The light part works like any power compact , the transformer charges the bulb and the bulb radiates. In this case the bulb has metallic ions in it which when charged produce ultraviolet radiation which has a germicidal affect. The bulb is inside the quartz sleeve(If it touches the water directly it will run too cool and not be effective)You use a powerhead or internal filter and pump the water into the pvc chamber and the water flows by the germicidal bulb and it sterlizes the water. Most commercial water systems and the armed forces use this technology to purify water.

Jebo corporation has some new models on the market which are quite economical. The UV h -11,18, and 24 watt units.I was quite skeptical of them until I tested a unit. My saltwater aquarium has ick really bad so I installed a unit-the H-11 on my aquarium. I used a rio 80gh powerhead to run it and in 3 days the ick was gone never to be seen again. I was a believer. Since then I have used them on ponds, saltwater fish, discus etc and they work great.Also another great unit available on ebay is the turbotwist unit, by Esu.



When first installing your U.V. take into consideration the size of the aquarium when deciding on the flow rate of the unit.You want a flow rate of minimum 1x the gallons of your aquarium and maximum 4x the gallons. I.e a sixty gallon minimum flow is 60gh and maximum is 240gh. This will make sure that the effectiveness is not comprimised.Also when first running it run it for a least a week to resolve the problem and then only part time after that.Run them on your aquarium for 3 to 4 days after adding fish to your freshwater or saltwater aquarium or pond, and then periodically for at least 24 hours. U.V sterlizers are a great addition to your aquatic environment to keep up water quality.

expecially those using canister filter, also they are great as additional filtration in any aquarium, especially in aquariums like hexes where there is little room for hang on filters.. The canister filters(external type) have a tendancy to clog up quickly if they are not cleaned regularly. However I have found that none of them are user friendly when you have to take them apart. I have 30 years in the industry and still have a hard time putting them back together. Also every time you take them apart they have a tendancy to break somewhere- either a lock down clip, o ring, or in valve. So to remedy this I recommend an internal filter. The Jebo, and lifetech 1500, 2500 great for this. They fit in the aquarium in a corner and use hight speed powerhead motors to prefilter and pull most of the waste out of the tank. The jebo models come with 200gh+ powerheads and then filter attachments and media to prefilter.In a saltwater tank they work great when using protein skimmers and wet dry filters to pull particles out that will clog the units. They also have a dual purpose by creating wave action when attached near the surface. Both these units are problem free and I give them four stars. The penn plax cascade 300 filter is one of the most economical and effecient units for small aquariums and turle amphibian tanks. It needs one inch of water to operate does over 70 gh. It includes a air injector attachment so it can aireate and filter. It is great for small aquariums for both filter and air. We also have now in stock a new model the Lifetech 2500 f , for large aquariums and ponds,It has four chambers and flows over 400gh.

Update: We now carry two new internal units by jebo that are better than ever. The 1500f and the 2500f.


Both have same features as the others with new more powerful motors and air injection to create wave action in your tank. The 1500f does over 200gh and is good for filtration in aquariums and turtle tanks up to 30 gallons, and in series with a canister filter you can use it on aquariums up to 100 gallons.The 2500 does over 450 gallons per hour and is good for aquariums and ponds up to 150 gallons. Both units work great in conjuction with canister filters as they prefilter the water and are easy to clean, and thus makes it longer times between cleaning on the canisters.They both have excellent air injection systems which when operation create a lot of surface wave action without a lot of noise.
Also some new smaller models are in stock now the hagen elite mini, and the new reptile model the Repticlean.The repticlean is great for amphibian tanks with turtles frogs etc, The hagen elite works great for this also but can double as a mini filter wave make for nano tanks and betta tanks, It needs about 2 in of water to function and comes with air injector which creates pulsating wave action.The larger models the Ap 1500 and Ap 2500 are great for ponds up to about 300 gallons. All in all internal filters are cheap, economical on electricity and do a great filtration job.

This guide I hope will be helpful to those looking for a low maintenance filter for their aquarium.Aquarium canister filters ie. penn plax cascade, Jebo cs4, fluval filters, eheims, filstar filters , and the new commidity axis 750 are all such filters.

First you want to look for a filter that has multiple filtration chambers which all of the above do. This way you can have prefilter pads. carbon and bio media.(make sure you pack them right) Then check the flow rate of the filters. Compare to your aquarium size. You need a flow rate of minimum three times the gallons of your aquarium to work well. As an example if you have a 30 gallon aquarium then flow rate should be over 90gh. A reputable dealer will tell you what flow rate the filters are. The faster the better. Then check your pocket book and see what you can spend. The Jebo and lifetech canisters are the most economical but make sure you buy from and experienced dealer, who can get you parts. Most filtration media is universal and can be put in all the models. If you are looking for longer lasting filters look towards the penn plax cascade, the fluval models or filstar, they are higher priced but are more durable.Also check and make sure the seller includes filtration media with the unit, as some aquarium canister filters you have to buy the media seperate. For the advanced aquariust the Eheim models are higher priced but the highest quality.Also to make them lower maintenance I recommend buying an internal prefilter unit to pull debri and fish waste out of the water so you can clean it more often and clean the canister filters every few months. Canisters are made to be hidden behind the aquarium but are messy to clean and sometimes if you mess with them too much you will have to replace parts.

Magnum canister filter are great units but do to the lack of multiple filtration chambers have to be clean quite often, The hot magnum 250 is the best for clearing up an aquarium after clean as it comes with a micron cartridge which pulls very small particles out of the water. Just make sure you clean it after it slows down.

The new Jebo canister are great economical canister filters , they include the Odyssea Cs4 , the Lifetech 828 and 838, and the new Newport B28. They come complete with multistage baskets and all filter media and are the best buy for the money, The filter media alone would cost over 40.00 dollars at a pet store.They are made with better plastic now than they were and can run months at a time with out cleaning, Check my other guides for info on these units for fresh and saltwater use.

This guide is for the beginner saltwater aquarist on how to setup a marine aquarium. The main things to consider when switching from freshwater aquarium to a saltwater aquarium are these, 1)The ocean is consitant in its water quality as in PH, Salinity, Nitrates,Oxygen and mineral content. These things must be maintained in a marine Aquarium. You need a substrate in your aquarium that will release calcium carbonates to maintain a high ph as in the ocean. Crushed coral, oyster shell, and limestone substrates(gravel) are perfect for this. They slowly dissolve in the water to balance the PH and release chemicals that keep the water like the ocean. Next you need a good salt mix to make the freshwater you use similiar to the oceans water. Instant Ocean, Ocean pure, Red SEA, all make salt mixes to do this. The third thing you need is above average filtration and aireation in your saltwater aquarium . You want filters with high flow rates(min 4x the size of the tank) in order to purify the water and break down the ammonia and nitrates. Aireation is important to the aquarium as it oxygenates the water and helps break of gases that are bad for you marine environment. Use canister filters, wet dry units and protein skimmers, plus wave maker powerheads and internal filters to do this.Keep in mind most saltwater fish are caught in the wild and not raised in aquariums and they must have conditions similiar to the ocean. One of the last things to remember is that saltwater fish, corals etc must have lighting similiar to the sun in order to thrive. Buy a good power compact light that duplicates sunlight at a ratio of 3 to 5 watts per gallon, ie 20 gallon tank=60 watts light. Last of all do research on marine aquariums go on forums, find a knowledgeable store to help you and be careful to find out what fish do well , and can cohabitate.



After keeping in mind these facts find a suitable aquarium for your saltwater friends, put crushed coral gravel in (after rinsing or it will cloud), fill the tank 3/4 with water and use chloramine remover at the correct dose, add your marine salt mix at about two cups for ten gallons. Install and acivate your filtration so it is properly working. After about an hour check the salinity with your hydrometer,If below 1023 add salt, if over remove some of the water and add fresh unit it is correct. It will take a while to get the hang of adjusting it.Then install heater, lighting decorations etc and wait about 24 hours and then you can add live sand and or rock and a few small starter fish.

Then decide by getting info on forums etc wheter you want fish, a reef tank and a combination of both.Remember add only a few items at a time until the tanks is at least 2 weeks established.

Update: In setting up your saltwater aquarium live rock is a plus. For reef aquariums you want to purchase at least a half a pound of it per gallon.ie 50 gallon tank=25lbs live rock. You can add a piece at a time to do this or all at once. Please remember that the function of live rock is to establish your saltwater aquarium with good micro organisms that will help keep the toxic waste buildup down in your aquarium Each piece of live rock acts as a mini filter bed for your aquarium. Wait at least 24 hours to make sure your aquarium is at the right salinity(1023 use a hydrometer to test it) and that all the filters are working right and the temperature is correct. Live rock can be bought as uncured or cured rock. If an established aquarium it is better to add cured live rock(It has been in a holding tank 1 to 2 weeks and the dead micro organisms and algae have come off of it) Live rock is collected and shipped dry and may take up to a couple of weeks to reach a store or holding facility so some of it dies off. If setting up a new tank you can use uncured rock, just add to the aquarium, but wait at least 10 days for adding any fish or inverts other than damsels.Your ammonia , and nitrates will goe up as it cures(dying organisms break down into this).The addition of a protein skimmer will speed this along. Skimmers churn the water by either air or injection in a round chamber and cause the dissoved proteins, waste and gases to break off in the collection cup.(A must for tanks with corals, anemones and inverts(reef tank)

Last on the updates for now is this, you can purchase live argonite sand(ocean sand) with the good organisms in it, and use it with your gravel bed and it will fully support aquatic life almost immediately, I set up mike tanks with at least 50%live sand and put fish in immediately. Also you can take live rock or sand out of an existing saltwater aquarium and start your tank right away.

Some of the new protein skimmers on the market are multifunctional and have room to make them wet dry filters in addition to protein skimmers. The most versatile units are the supreme skilter, and the Via Aqua multiskimmer. Both have chambers where you can put bio media like ceramic rings or bio balls and can make them multi use as both wet dry and protein skimmer.Both units are economical under 100.00 dollars and with the addition of bio media can be made into hang on wet dry skimmer units for smaller reef or saltwater aquariums. (under 80 gallons) Just pickup one of these models and put bio media in the extra space, hang them on your aquarium and put established bacteria in them and they are capable of supporting reef life with low cost.To make them low maintenance I recommend you buy and internal prefilter(goes in aquarium and pulls out debri and fish waste)and then you will have to clean them very little.

Today we will talk about aquarium canister filters. They are a type of external filtration(goes outside the aquarium)that work well in both salt and freshwater, and are very low maintenance.They are usually multi staged and contain 3 to 4 filtration baskets to hold a variety of filter media.The Jebo lifetech 838, the Odyssea cs4, the filtstar filters and the fluval series are all those type. The multistage filtration is very efficient in purifying aquarium water. The draw back to these type of filters are they are a little more dificult process to clean. My personal feeling is that they should be best used with internal filtration so you have to clean them less often.
