A. STRUCTURED PROGRAMME

Title of the project : Packet Tracer Simulation

Before Term Start.....

Before the starting of a new term, I have been given a Cisco Networking Textbook ,a simulation program called 'Packet Tracer' developed by Cisco and a set of lab sheets for hands-on experiment.

SP WEEK 1

I have study the 'Packet Tracer' and tried to build some simple connections with it.

However, my packets cannot flow from PC0 to PC1 even after I tried using straight and crossover cable. The problem solved when Mr Leong shows us a demostration of programming the router and setting of clock rate.Also during that week, Mr Lau conduct lessons to increase our knowledge. From him, I have learned about IP address, subnet, subnet mask, network address broacast, frame format and different kinds of topology and their uses

Apart from that,.I have also done some lab experiments of using ping command and understand how they worked.(cannot ping if the other party has firewall on). Then using Mr Leong demostration, I am told to create some similar topology and I have learned the command of programming the router more deeply.

SP WEEK 2

During our lesson with Mr Lau, he teaches us about Coxial Cables,STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) and others types of wire(the factors to consider, the problems and advantages)and connectors. I have learned to recognize the different types of wires.

Also, i did the lab on IP addressing A, B, C and know their differences. However, I often make mistakes of using the incorrect number of bits for subnetting and Mr Lau corrected my mistakes. After that, Mr Leong shows us a demostration about the collisions of packets and how does it happen and under what cirumstances. Then, I am told to create a office area network according to the IP addresses that I have been given and a sample of how typical HQ and branch office network is like.

SP WEEK3

During that week, we began to do some hands-on assigment given by Mr Chan.I have learned about setting up connection of the routers and the use of the console port and roll over cable. I was told to install the program 'etheral' to check the revelant information and also on using the hyperterminal. Hyperterminal is used to programme the router just like in the 'packet tracer' except it is not too user-friendly like the one in the 'packet tracer' and takes more time to troubleshoot.

I have learned about testing of cables through Mr Lau's lecture. Types of crosstalks, types of wiring faults. The test parameters that must be verified for a cable to meet TIA/EIA standards like Wire map, insertion loss, cable length and etc. At the end of the day, Mr Leong demostrated to us the Dynamic Routing, Static routing and Class A,B & C sub-netting.

SP WEEK 4

Mr Chan gave us some more hands-on lab assignments on the last week lab. It was about the same as the last week lab except that it is much more complicated as it involves 3 routers. He demostrated by programming one of the router and wants us to program the other 2 of the router. The topology is something like a 2 hops away.

The commands that we used to programmed the router is more or less the same. This is some other commands that we have learn like erase start, reload, host ______, no ip domain-lookup, copy run start, ip dhco e.

SP WEEK 5

As the date to the panel review is near, our supervisors wanted to see our 'packet tracer' programmes. According to what Mr Leong's demostration and Mr Lau teaching, I came out with quite a few of the designs. These designs including showing delay time, collisions, subnetting with different classes, wireless lan, office network. Also , as my computer are unable to use the VPN (Virtual Private Network) to upload the web pages from my home to school. I came up with an idea of using the Angelfire free website. Lastly, I have created a flash animation of peer to peer communications to show the concept of how encapsulation process. Also, I tried to study the codes to see how 'packet tracer' is being programmed by the Cisco. Then, I shall use the Flash MX combine with packet tracer to give the audience a good presentation.
