Fruits Basket
Fruits Basket starts of with the heroin, Honda Tohru, who passed by a house where her classmate, Souma Yuki, a very popular and well-known student of their resides. Here she also met Yuki's relative, Shigure, who took an instant liking to her due to according to him, they were compatible because they were born on the Year of the Dog. Little did Tohru know at that time that what Shigure said was to be quite taken literally.
Tohru was an only child and at the start of the story, already an orphan. Her father died when she was young and her mother left the world due to an accident two months before the story proper. She used to live with her grandfather and not wanting to be a burden, she took an after-school job to buy her needs and pay her own tuition. Her ultimate dream was too finish high school, which is also her mother's dream for her.
A time came when her grandfather had his house renovated. Her grandfather stayed with some of their relatives. Tohru, not wanting to be a burden to others, even to her friends, decided to live on her own. She was shown to live in a small tent in a small clearing, which happened to be land ownded by the Souma family. They took her in for symphaty of her plight and since they seem to like her. Tohru at first refused their generousity. It was too much according to her. Shigure thought of a compromise, that Tohru could pay thier good deed by managing their household. Tohru agreed.
It was on that moment that Tohru accidentally uncovered a secret of the Souma's. Together with another Souma relative, named Kyo, who dropped by a little later, Tohru discovered that the Souma's transform to animals from the Chinese Zodiac when gotten to physical contact with the opposite sex or when their bodies are weak. Chosen Souma members are born with this curse. Very few people knew of this secret. It is well hidden even from 'normal' members of the Souma clan. Shigure transformed into a black dog, Yuki into a white mouse, and Kyo into an orange cat. Obviously, Tohru was shocked at the discovery but soon was able to accept them for who they are. It is one thing the Souma's like so much about Tohru is she is able to see the goodness of other people's hearts despite their appearances. It is this attitude of hers that other member of the cursed Juunishi came one after another to Shigure's house to meet Tohru and create 'hilarious' havoc to each others lives.
There was Kagura, one of the cursed female members of the Souma's. She transformed into a boar. She claimed to be Kyo's finacee despite how much Kyo denied it. She has this attitude to beat the life out of Kyo as her way of expressing her deep feelings for him.
There was Momiji, the cute and bubbly rabbit of the clan. At first glace, he is mistaken for an elementary boy but is actually of Tohru's age. He has this tendency to look so much a girl when he wants to.
Next was the serious doctor of the clan, Hatori. He is the only member of the clan told to have powers. His was to erase memories of other people, especially those who acquired the knowledge of the curse by accident. He deeply safeguards the protection of the cursed members of the clan.
And there was Akito, the Souma clan head. He is a deep, weird, lonely and fearful figure of the story. All Souma members fear him despite his frail outlook since he is always sick.
There were more characters in the story. What makes Fruits Basket unique is the way the insecurities and predicaments were portrayed by each character. Despite the hilariousness of many scenes in every episode, the way pains were portrayed similar to real life were so simple and subtle, it makes one realize her own life pains. Each Juunishi character had their inner conflicts and I bet everyone could claim to be in similar plight with a certain character. Tohru's role here was sort of the 'advisor'. The certain person, who can help cleanse the pain away. From her comes morals and revelations that are often forgottein in real life.
As a final note for this introduction, Fruits Basket, at first looks like a comedy. But never let the comical drawings fool you because hidden in each laughter are true-to-life pains that are felt by everyone. In each comical scene is a life moral waiting to be shown. One has only to watch and see what I mean.

Thanx!
