Human Anatomy

Notes 1

Page 1
An Introduction to Anatomy Anatomy is the study of structures. Physiology is the study of functions. All specific functions are performed by specific structures!!! (Nasal Cavity pages 621 and 623.)

MICROSCOPIC (fine) anatomy

  1. cannot be seen without magnification
  2. specialties include: Cytology and Histology
MACROSCOPIC (gross) anatomy
  1. can be seen with the unaided eye
  2. approaches: surface, regional, systemic
  3. specialties include: developmental (embryology), comparative
  4. Levels of Organization:

There are eleven "Organ Systems" in the human body, they are:
    1. Integumentary
    2. Skeletal
    3. Muscular
    4. Nervous
    5. Endocrine
    6. Cardiovascular
    7. Lymphatic
    8. Respiratory
    9. Digestive
    10. Urinary
    11. Reproductive (male and female)

The properties and processes of all living organisms:
    1. Responsiveness (irritability and adaptability)
    2. Growth and Differentiation
    3. Reproduction
    4. Movement
    5. Metabolism (all chemical operations in the body) and Excretion
Homeostasis is the result of the normal functioning of all 11 organ systems. Homeostasis is the maintenance of a relatively constant internal environment.

    The Language of Anatomy

    Superficial (surface):

    Sectional:

Dorsal Cavity- contains the cranial and spinal cavities Ventral Cavity- contains the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities
